Poll: Red Planet or Mission to Mars? (I KNOW, neither. Not an option in this poll.)

Hey all,

I saw MTM in theaters. Then, while Red Planet was still being made, my good friend in SFX who did about 40 effects scenes for Red Planet told me "The CG is better, but the movie's just as bad." --So I didn't see Red Planet until this weekend. I got it on DVD, mainly just to see his shots. Well, I personally thought Red Planet was MUCH MUCH better. Neither was a great movie, I know, but that's not an option. Which was the lesser of two evils?

If Red Planet was anything like the second half of Mission to Mars, it's a waste of time.

If you're into that Mars colonization stuff, read the book "Red Mars" by Kim Stanley Robinson. It gets a little wierd (i.e. speculatory) towards the end, but the first half of the book is probably the best fictional work on Mars colonization.

Yeah, I thought Mission to Mars was kind of hokey. Red Planet was cool though, if just for the robot. My little sister has a huge crush on Val Kilmer, so I scored parent points by taking her out for a night to see it.

Ummmm...NO. Like I said, I thought Red Planet was much much better. Mission to Mars pissed me off, it was so cheesy. Red Planet, while still utterly implausible, was no preachy, sappy, or supernaturally unreal. The unbelieveable stuff in it was just the standard fare. --Mainly stuff about physics and computers, just like in every other movie. --The kind of stuff you've learned to overlook if you watch movies at all. MTM was just SH!T in my opinion.

haven't seen either. If you are interested in planet colonization and stuff, read "Cosmos" and "A Pale Blue Dot" by Carl Sagan. Both great reads. Cosmos might be the most interesting book I have ever read.

I'm not that interested in Mars colonization. I have read Cosmos, though. I didn't watch either movie to satisfy my thirst for info on colonization. I watched MTM because it looked like a good slick, mindless summer movie, and it weas the best thing out that weekend (and by summer movie standards, it was decent), and, like I said, I only watched Red Planet to see my friend's effects shots. --But I enjoyed (read: don't feel like I completely wasted 1:509 of my life) Red Planet.

I just bought RP and saw it for the first time.

I thought MtM, which I saw in the theatres, was better though both of them were bad.

A lot of stuff in RP didn't makes sense and it seemed a bunch of stuff came out of the blue. For example, when did the conflict between Julia Robert's boyfriend (forgot his movie name) and Pettengil start or the relationship between Bowater and Val Kilmer?

I at least enjoyed MtM for the visuals. I thought the feline AMEE doing kung fu was a little too much.

MTM was terrible. Bad acting, trite storyline. Didn't care for the characters at all. Pathetic.

Mission to Mars was possibly the worst movie I've seen in the theatres... Worse than Lenard Part 6.

Nothing was worse than Leonard Part 6 maybe with the exception of the Light of Day with Michael J Fox and Joan Jett.

I never saw MTM. I heard it was just horrible.

I did see RP tho. I thought it was actually ok - and Carrie Ann Moss was good too

I have only seen MTM. I thought it was bad. It was 2001 plot all over again with only slight deviations. Too bad Hollywood can't make a truely inspired and scientifically founded Mars movie.

I haven't seen RP, but I thought MTM was ok. What really ruined MTM, IMO, was the uber-sucky music. WTF did they get a 4 year old to do the musical score!? Didn't the director or someone else notice how horribly bad it was?

My vote for worst movie would have to be battlefield earth, what the heck was travolta thinking on that one. Mission to mars blew big bubbles and i just finished ordering the red planet dvd lets see if that keeps me entertained for more than 15 minutes.

wouldnt it be hard to LOOK at a string of DNA and tell what species it is? i thought that was pretty funy

i only saw the RED PLANET in the theaters and I never got a chance to see MTM. My bros saw it and from others, I heard MTM sucked big donkey &^%&#@. I never did see it, and I dont think i want to. I heard there is no plot and the story just goes random. blef!

Yeah that would be hard to do... but that same character was shown early in the movie constructing a DNA helix out of skittles, making it somehow revolve in space while maintaining its shape despite the fact that the skittles themselves weren't connected.

so maybe he had super martian powers or something.
