This is totally useless speculation, but:
Who thinks they will be buying an NV20 within a year?
Who thinks they will be buying a Rampage within a year?
Who thinks they will get a card other than NV20 or rampage within a year?
Who is waiting over a year to get a new card?

If everyone follows their respective roadmaps, in a year's time there should be out
- several cards based on NV25, "refreshed" version of NV20 chip from nVidia
- several variations of cards based on Rampage chip from 3dfx, as well as third-party manufacturer 3dfx-based cards
- ATi Radeon II and possibly Radeon II MAXX
- card(s) based on XBA T&L chip from Bitboys :p

I won't vote for any of these yet, but gotta say, all of 'em look mighty sweet :)

I think I'm gonna keep my MX for a couple of more months, and when the NV20 and Rampage DO release, the 64MB GeForce2GTS will come farther down in price for me to afford. Yay!!:)

I'll consider NV20 IF:

1) They fix their nasty 2d problem with trinitron monitors
2) They improve their FSAA
3) It offers a drastic improvement over today's cards IN GAMES, not just benchmarks
4)It is better than spectre/Radeon-II/G800

I'll consider Spectre IF:

1) It is significantly faster than the 5500
2) It is faster than the NV20 (assuming NV20 "fixes" what I wrote above)
3) It's T&L unit is needed for tomorrow's games (I suspect it will, but I'm not real concerned just yet)

I"ll consider ATi and Matrox IF:

1) NV20 and Spectre are jacked up
2) G800 and/or RadeonII kick ass
3) No driver or game compatibilty problems.

Although I'm rooting for 3dfx I think the NV20 will kill the Rampage. But when 3dfx's Mosaic(?) comes out, they'll be very competitive. Still when either card comes out it'll retail for close to $300. That's WAY to much for me, that's like a PS2! :)

AFAIK, they aren't planning a NV20 MX. Mid and low-end products will be GTS and GF2 MX.

True dat Dave...nVidia already has a whole crapload of products on the market. We don't need more to clutter it up even more.

I too would like to get more mileage out of my MX ,however I will wait for benchmarks & stability will also be a important factor.

I have a Voodoo3-2000 right now and it's served me well but I want an upgrade, it has served me well since August 99 for about $150 canadian ($100US)

I expect the NV20 to be faster than Rampage, but I intend to buy a Rampage.

Why?

Well for starters a GeForce 2MX is fast enough for me and I expect a Rampage to be faster than that. I'm honestly quite happy in 800x600x32Bit, so as long as a year from now a Rampage can play games playably at 8x6 I'm happy, and I suspect it will be since the standard resolution for gamers is 10x7 if not higher so 800x600 should stil be decently playable.

I want Glide, call it dead if you want but as far as I'm concerned UT engine games still run better in Glide than D3D, and Diablo2 runs hella better in Glide than D3D. As for UT I play Rune and Duke Nukem forever is suppose to be UT engine as well...I heard at one point that War3 was going to be glide to, but then later I heard that its' T&L capable so that's probably not true...but anyhow, I still want Glide support for a while. Call it dead and flame me all you want that won't change my opinion.

And my personal experiences with nvidia cards have been on the whole pretty negative (compatibilty issues I mean) where as both my Voodoo1 and voodoo3 have worked flawlessly from day one without a single problem.

And finally I'm hoping that there will be two rampages, 1 chip and 2 chip like the V4 and V5. So I can buy the hopefully reasonably priced single chip, while the V5 has come down alot in price recently I'm not the kind to pay GeForce2 prices for my graphics cards...nVidia doesn't seem to make their old generations cheaper, then just add $50 to it for the new generations.

I'll buy whatever card will give me 50+ FPS at 1280x1024 32bit color with 4xFSAA. I don't see that happening anytime soon though.

What I look forward to is a Dual-Rampage Single-SAGE card, if something like that is to be manufactured. Reasons being: Support for more features than anything else, and more than acceptable speed. What I really want is to have 4X AA at framerates comparable to what I get without AA right now.

I will get a NV20. I was going to get a GeForce 2 but prices froze around $170 for the OEM Visiontek boards. The Ultra is way too expensive considering the NV20 will blow it away in 1 month. I've been running a VooDoo3 2000@3000 that I got for $100 the first week they came out. A frustrating card in some ways but it has provided good speed and decent quality in most games up until recently. I certainly got my moneys worth out of it. The difference in Sacrifice with my VooDoo3 vs my friends GeForce2 is unbelievable though, its too huge to even describe. If you don't believe me you will have to check it out for yourself. I think DX8 will be the last of many deathknells for Glide. If Warcraft3 runs better in Glide than a NV20 or 25 its because its graphics suck. While I'm sure it will be a great game, considering how far it still is away from release I hope they update the graphics before its released. While the screenshots looked impressive a year ago compared to whats out now they suck and considering its possibly a year away they will really be outdated then. As for Rampage I will bet NVIDIA sells 10 times as many NV20's as 3dfx sells Rampage's if they even sell any. It would be nice if somebody could compete with NVIDIA but it just doesn't look like anybody is up to the task.

There's a nice objective statement...

Unlike most of the posters here I'm not loyal to one manufacturer. I favor 3dfx because of game compatability but everything will come down to price/performance ratio in real games that I play. The V3 3000 I have offered the best price/performace/compatability of the cards at the time and when I upgrade I will select something that offers equivalency over the peers that the V3 did.

Rudee, that's actually possible in the next generation cards. If you look at Wingnutz' benches he did with the new HSR drivers for the V5(lol so they aren't official, but it's better than nothing), 3dfx's FSAA speeds have increased dramatically.

must see benches but am leaning towards rampage since they may carry on glide support in the next iteration.

If Rampage has more of that good HSR that I'm now hearing about on the voodoo5 cards...

...count me in on Rampage:cool:

From Warcraft III FAQ:
What graphics API are you supporting?

We are supporting Direct3D and OpenGL. We are not supporting Glide.

Good riddance :) In the end propietary stuff does not serve consumer's best interests.

Wow! Folks have a lot of confidence in Rampage! I own Nvidia stock, but I will put the faster card in my system next year even if it is not made by Nvidia.

I've got a GF DDR right now, so I'll be due for an upgrade when the next gen comes out. I'm leaning heavily towards the Rampage, I'll be surprised if the NV20 is noticeably faster, and more surprised if the NV20 has comparable image quality.
I have a 21" monitor, and the 2D on my DDR is really horrible at high res. It's also an old monitor, with not the best refresh rates, so I'd benefit from some decent FSAA, and I think the rampage will almost definately offer better FSAA than the NV20. Either way though, I could easily see myself going over to the Fear once it comes out, because I believe that'll blow away both the rampage and the NV20, whereas the NV25 is supposed to just be a refreshed NV20.

You know, seems like all the know how on this board, if we quit bickerring, could we figure out what tech stocks to buy?
