I wash my shoes quite regularly... about once every couple of months. They don't last long, but i'll rather have clean shoes and replace them every year than stinky shoes (i have 3 pairs at any one time).
I just toss them in with the socks as well... i figure the socks acts like a cushion for the washer... and to dry them, i just leave them upside down a heat vent.

It's much better for the shoes to just take a toothbrush to them.
