hm does anybody else support the idea that "root" is for routes on a physical road system etc and "rowt" is for a metaphorical route?

I say route like root when talking about a highway or something but I say rowt for router and routes in the routing table.

Yep.

Take this route (rowt) to get to your destination. Start on Route (root) 19, then head down..... etc..

Famous mis-pronounciation ("I get my kicks on Route 66") aside, I pronounce it "rowt". I mean, come on, where else in the bloody language is "ou" pronounced "oo"? "ou" is always "ow".

ZV

EDIT: You people who say "root", do you also putter around aboot your hoose before you go oot for dinner?

Seconded.

Not the cool part... the pronunciation part. But hey, you can be cool if you say so. :)

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. You guys have been flexing your networking muscles too long. It's ROOT. It never was "ROWT" until some dumb-ass hick decided a slight miscorelation between spelling and pronunciation was too much for him to handle.
