i just noticed that my sony cdr extracts audio better than my nec dvd...

Some macs (i dont have one) only have a cdr...

i always thought cdr were somewhat precious and ONLY to be used for burning.

I have 3 Drives
My CD-Rom Drive - for Installing and playing games
My CDRW - For burning
and my DVD - for watching movies

For some reason I don't like using my other drives for other stuff, etc.

i have one dvd drive and 1 cd-rw and ive used both for just doing installing and stuff, but usually i use my dvd for normal stuff because the eject button is like 1-2 inches lower than the far away cd-rw.

i had this setup.
Creative 2X DVD - incredibly slow, but i used as my main drive and for dvd's.
Plextor 8/4/32 - used ONLY to burn.

DVD died after awhile because of constant install/running of programs and what not, but it was ok becuz i got it for cheap. i would never do that to the Plextor, just becuz it cost me $180 for that drive. my rule of thumb - always use the cheaper, easier to replace drive as your main one.

i would get one of each (CD, CDRW, and DVD), but the way my hard drive is partitioned, it messes up the drive order if i have all 3. anyone know how to solve that?

Toshiba 12X DVD - main drive
Yamaha 8x/4x/24x - secondary, don't use it except for burning (slow transfer/doesn't do ATA/33)

Used to use my cdrw as main drive, but it took too long to respond when I'd start up a game. I'd always get the "please insert the ____ CD and hit retry. Now it is the secondary drive.

Nope, I got a plex 40x SCSI to do my reading, and a plex 4x SCSI burner.
Selling my Toshiba 4x IDE DVD and hope to find a SCSI DVD of some kinda....somewhere....sometime :)

2 Drives.

Ricoh 8X8X32 - Main drive - Used for burning CD's and reading CD's if the other drive is full.

Pioneer 10X DVD Drive - Secondary drive - Used for playing Audio and installing stuff (cause its a bit faster (40X cd read).

Over all, I use the DVD drive for more "tasks" then the CDRW.

Toshiba 12X DVD-ROM
HP9350i 10x4x32 CD rewriter.

Let's see the Toshiba only cost me $65 brand new and the HP $25 brand new after PM and MIR (love those Hot Deals). So there is no "main" one for CD-ROM drive. Whichever is open. Both are equally fast.

I have:

2x Creative DVD drive
4x CDR drive

I use the DVD drive the most, but sometimes I do use the CDR drive for stuff other than burning (eg. when I am too lazy to change CDs)... but DVD is still my main drive...

GhettoFob - I would search the General Hardware forum for the word DVD. I last recall Pioneer and Toshiba DVD drives were highly recommended, there's numerous threads on the topic in that forum.

I use my CD-RW to read burned cd's because my CD-ROM cannot read 700mb disks and lags like crazy. My CD-ROM is for reading regular cd's.

I building a computer right now as I speak. For now, it has a 50x cd-rom and an 8x4x32 burner. I got the cd-rom (free after MIR) before the hot deal came along on the CD-RW. So I put both into the computer. I will tell me sister (who I'm building this for) to use the cd-rom as her main cd drive. Later I will probably also get her a DVD-rom.
