I'm wondering what you all think of Planned Parenthood - Good or Bad?

I never really thought about this question until today, because I needed to drive my girlfriend's friend there (I dont know (and didnt want to know) why she had to go). Upon entering the parking lot, I saw a few picketers (sp?) holding anti-Planned Parenthood signs.

So I ask you... barring frivolous details, what is your opinion of Planned Parenthood... good or bad?

PS: Feel free to share frivolous details with us in your post though :)

edit: After 2 failed attempts, this post actually worked. Let's hear what ya'll have to say

I have never dealt with them but from what I understand, their intentions are good.

Don't you think if God wanted us not to have children he would have made women with an on off switch?

Ah yes. More cheap shots at religion. Can't have enough of those.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Planned Parenthood, here is a tidbit from their "Mission Statement":

Planned Parenthood believes in the fundamental right of each individual, throughout the world, to manage his or her fertility, regardless of the individual's income, marital status, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, national origin, or residence. We believe that respect and value for diversity in all aspects of our organization are essential to our well-being. We believe that reproductive self-determination must be voluntary and preserve the individual's right to privacy. We further believe that such self-determination will contribute to an enhancement of the quality of life, strong family relationships, and population stability.

edit: Let's not turn this into a religion bashing or abortion praising/bashing thread... lets keep this unlocked!

Well, I have no problem with people believing in God, werewolves, or whatever.. It just bothers me when people use the bible or their idea of god to shape their socio-political outlook (or, at it's worst, social policy)... "If God wanted us to fly wouldn't he have given us wings?"..Sorry, but I like airplanes..

Since the thread is already headed this direction, let me be the first to say: they're better than coathangers in back alleys, which is the alternative.

BAD!

Their method of "planning" is murder.

Actually, a lot of people have NO idea what planned parenting is.. Having been to an office (my gf goes to college in the city and needed to get tested for ovarian cancer.. long story).. They offer a wide range of female services.. Abortion is a small part of it.. They offer birth control pills on a sliding scale (free if you can't afford it), free or cheap exams, STD testing, conseling, etc. etc. etc.. Really, you can't really be AGAINST planned parenting if you actually know what it is.. You could be against abortion, but the institution isn't synonymous with abortion.. in fact, as the name implies, they're more about education and planning through condoms/ birth control products..

Planned Parenthood

I am not a "strong" supporter of abortion but it has a role to play in controling reproduction. Planned Parenthood has long been a great proponent of conception control (condoms, RU486, DepoProvera, IUD, the Pill, AND education). If the people who profess such a great love for humanity would commit a fraction of that passion towards ALL effective means of conception control . . . abortion would be far less common in America.

Planned Parenthood has indeed played a role in millions of abortions but they've also played a pivotal role in avoiding millions of unwanted pregnancies through their advocacy for conception control.

I'd like to know the rationale behind those who voted "bad".

You want this to turn into an abortion debate?

This isn't about abortion.

The majority of people who are against planned parenthood don't realize that abortion is the LAST thing they recommend. They first try to find out if the couple may just be having second thoughts and if they'd like to keep the baby. If they're adamant about not keeping it, they see if the parents would be interested in placing it up for adoption. Only when all the other options are exhausted do they start the abortion counseling.

On top of that, they also give away condoms for free, to prevent unwanted pregnancies from ever occuring. They're a good source for finding out information on other contraceptive methods. If you can find any way to spin this to be bad, lemme know, and I'll call you a puritan.

I voted BAD, but I didn't read the thread and I wasn't aware of what the whole Planned Parenthood thing was. Sounds fine.

While I've luckily never been in this situation, I did see signs and posters up saying "Adoption is an option" or something to that effect.. Some people think that P.P. is all about lesbians running around with surgical knives cutting out fetuses.. They really do help a lot of people during a very difficult time in their lives.. Though I do have some hatred towards habitual abortionists.. Like this one woman was bragging that it was her 3rd abortion.. That sickens me.. But I wonder what kind of mother she would be had planned parented and abortion not been an option..

Wow.. An anandtech forum lead to at least one person learning more about an issue and that life is not always painted in simple blacks and whites.. I feel a tear coming on :) j/k
