I have one hour to cancel my order for the Pioneer and go for the Toshiba if it's better.

Toshiba from what I hear works better with CloneCD and Disc to Disc, and is cheaper by $10

Pioneer is suppose to be the best according to a lot of reviews, but my 6X pioneer slot load just died after 1.5years of service.

Any opinions?

You'd probably be good with either one. I've got a Pioneer myself, and love it. Haven't found a DVD yet that it couldn't play, and I found a bios update to make it region-free. Only problems are that it is a little loud, and it is HOT - as in, you could warm a cup of coffee on the top of my tower (drive is in top bay) after a two hour movie. Well, maybe not quite that bad, but you get the idea.

You really can't lose with either one. I ordered a Pioneer 16x Slot (the reason I went pioneer is because Toshiba doesn't make slot, so I had no choice)

After using both, I would go for the Toshiba if you like silent operation.

I bought the Toshiba and it is quiet. DVDSpeed99 reports are satisfying for speed. I found that it has some flutter issues with playing audio CDs that I don't recall with previous CDROM, a Kenwood True 72x.

I had a Pioneer 10x and now I have a Toshiba 12x.

I would take the Toshiba any day. It's better at reading CDRs and CDRWs, and also a lot quieter.

For DVD they are about even, but the Pioneer was so bad at being a CDROM I actually got a separate CDROM.

The Toshiba is a really good CDROM as well as DVDROM.
