POLL: Pick a logo! (New poll with one additional option!)

Setting; one of my senior "older kung fu brother" is starting a full-time martial arts school.

Premise: I made a few posters for a some special events within the kung fu studio. Seeing some of this, he has asked me to design a logo for the man. He has come up with a name - Guardian Martial Arts.

Conflict: None, really. Just finished making them - ultimately, the decision will be his, and I suspect there's some tweaking to be done, but I thought I'd be amused to find out ATOT's opinion.

Oh, and one's a rehash of another.

EDIT: poll is re-done since there's one new addition, and since the guy hasn't replied at all with *any* feedback, I'm halting all work (logo work, a poster for an upcoming event) that I was supposed to do for the man (for free, even! :|)

12345 - before anyone asks, the chinese for that is "kung fu".

Guan Gong (??) , or Guan Di (??), is a Chinese god based on the historical Guan Yu, a third century military commander. He is often called the "Chinese God of War" though this title is not entirely appropriate.

The apotheosis of Guan Yu occurred in stages, as he was given ever large posthumous titles. Liu Shan, the son of Liu Bei, awarded Guan Yu the title of "Zhuangmiu Marquis" a few decades after his death. During the Ming dynasty he was credited with aiding Zhu Yuanzhang's fleet at the Battle of Boyang and later with repulsing the Japanese invasion of Korea by the Shogun Hideyoshi. The ruling Manchu house of the Qing dynasty associated with his martial qualities and awarded him ever larger titles, even exceeding that of the emperor himself. During the twentieth century Guan Yu was worshipped by the warlord Yuan Shikai, president and later emperor of China.

Today there are still numerous temples dedicated to Guan Yu, depicted with a red face and long beard, holding the Guan Dao, a sword with long handle (some rumored that it had been 80+ kilograms in weight, or about 170 pounds) which was named after him. He is also red-faced in Chinese operas.

In Hong Kong, a shrine for Guan Gong is located in each police station. Most Chinese policemen pay respect to him, and worship him. Members of the Triad worship him too.

People in jiang hu(??) respect him for he epitomise the Chinese concept of "Yi Qi" (??), which is a virtue these people seek among themselves.

In Hong Kong and among Cantonese speakers, he is often referred to as "Yi Gor" (?? second big brother) for he was second to Liu Bei in their blood brotherhood.

In Buddhism, he is respected as a protector of Buddhist temples, and is known as Sangharama. (????)

Two is best, but although the quality is good for all of them none look really karate related.

That's 'cause it's Kung Fu related! (pet peeve for all martial arts students - when others confuse your styles)

To contrast it, imagine your reaction if they saw you PC and called it an iBook - amusing at first, but when a good chunk of the population think that, it gets to you.

Anyhow, over-reacting aside :)o), even the logos with the:

fat santa claus ninja guy

Doesn't seem Kung Fu related?

I would suggest doing a little more research to really get the logo to grasp this dojo. I don't know, when I see these logos, it seems that they're just trying to be eye-candy almost forgetting what it's trying to represent. Other than (who I assume is) Guan Gong, everything else looks somewhat rushed. Why not just have him, but have a clean 1-line sans-serif (no huge height thing like what you have) font for the words?

Well, actually, I had a little sit-down with the man, and #1 was something that he came up with, as far as idea is concerned. Honestly, yeah - the font on the last two are a bit on the annoying side. Will fix shortly.

edit: I remembered why I picked that font - to get the right spacing, as far as letter and overall focus goes, the "normal" fonts, even Impact, are too fat to fit correctly.

Also, I don't do logos. I do posters, and that's on a irregualr basis as it is - designing logos is a first for me.

Black and white, it opens new possibilites and I'm adjusting to them. Pain in the ass.

If he likes #1 (since he made it), may I suggest a bit cleaner strokes? Reason why is purely because it almost conveys a message of a rough martial arist, rather than the smooth fluid movement that the body is trained to make. Also, I almost had no idea what that one arm was doing. I almost thought the thing was in an offensive, almost ready to attack offensively rather than "guard" stance.

I was actually thinking that (actually, the guy's hand is supposed to be a shield). Other options I haven't tried out are also there. WIll post tomorrow since I've got that whole "sleeping-and-waking-up"ballyhoo coming down . . ..

Actually, I talked to a programmer friend of mine - before I can get into cpanel, I have to learn dreamweaver - he's recommended that for me, and well, I know the kid, so he can help along the way (along with you guys, 'course! :D).

This might negate the whole "POLL" option but I've redesigned the logo for this as well - except that he still hasn't given me *any* feedback whatsoever! :|

#6 (since #5 was already taken ) - before anyone asks, the chinese for that is "kung fu".
