After using win2k for a year now, I don't see why people still go with win9x. I am not bothered with losing a few frames in games with win2k. My multimedia works fine (at least mine).

Stability is superb. No BSOD. This is not marketing speech, but I really don't see why win98 is favorable over win2k pro.

I am not gonna comment on winMe. It's a dissapointment.

I still have mix feelings about win me. But my bro likes it and it works well for him. I will stick with win2k myself. stability is something i enjoyed with NT 4 for years. And 2k keeps it going

wow err, I could say the same about Windows 98, seeing as I somehow managed to get it stable.

it's not rocket science, all you need to do is know how to treat your OS properly, and you have stability.

but when you are on the quest for performance, sometimes you have to sacrifice performance (by implimenting tweaks), which is what this thread is all about I'm guessing..

I've run Linux, and Windows 95 - 98, and I'd have to say this, Linux is gaining momentum.. all it needs now are new games that appear on MS gaming platforms to appear on Linux simultaneously..

Win 2K for stability.

But Win Me works very well, being turned off every night.

I leave my machine on for cracking rc5. I love having uptimes in the weeks, and not hours.

Oh a quick tip on win2k
if you are playing games in win2k and want a little more performance, create a user account for just gaming. Give it only user privilages. Reason being is that they are a lot less services load up in a user account has oppose to a admin type of account. Less services running = less overhead = more performance for gaming.

2k and nothing but 2k on my main system, the benefits of 2k over 98 are huge. Stopping useing 8x months ago and have never looked back.Exept cannot get my MicroSoft Strat. Commander to work with 2k :( but thats not a big loss..:) The stability is great and i haven't really noticed any speed difference between the two. (2k/9x) I would reccomend 256 megs of ram though for 2k

I personally thin Win2K exceeds Win 9X/ME in both Stability and performance in Biz apps and is in very close running in regard to gaming also.

Win2k beats any 9x version of Windows. As for it's stability, it sucks compared to NT 4.0. I guess it's a trade off because now I can play DX games under it.

i don't like 3dfx's driver support for win2k. i lose way too much performance from my V5. so i like to stick with ME for my gaming

I would be 100% Win2000Pro but the ATi TV-Wonder has crap for drivers in Win2000. So right now I'm Win98SE...I have it setup well and well tweaked, I haven't seen a BSOD in months. But still you can't leave it run 24/7...to many memory leaks and the like.

So I'm Win98SE all the way right now, but soon either ATi gets good drivers or at the end of April (I get my TV back, or rather I move back to my TV) I'm going all Win2000. I might go Whistler instead...have to wait and see it though.

Your question was Gaming, and on that front it's Win2000. I use my PC for lots of stuff, Programming, Desktop Apps (Word, IE, Email, the usual sh*t), Gaming, DVDs...all kinds of good stuff. I'd use Win2000 for all of it except that stupid TV-Wonder...grr...

So my overall answer is Win2000 by a long shot, the performance difference isn't enough to justify Win9x over NT5

I still use Win98 OS1 ,the reason is simple it`s rock stable on my system so don`t see the need to change just yet, mainly plays games both online & offline .Probably upgrade to Whistler if it`s any good.So I`m one of the rare breed that has Win98 very stable;)

I use Win98se as well. It's pretty stable on my system and I still have a few flight sims that I use which don't run under W2K. Eventually I'll make the switch, but for now I'm good. Fwiw.

I'm using Win98 1st edition! It is VERY stable for me too! I have heard from a mate of mine that he uses Win2K pro and it is also rock stable. My Win98 computers have hardly ever crashed, unless if I do soemthing stupid then it will say "Hey enough doodoo, screw you" and crashes, but apart from that it is stable as a rock.

I personally don't have $400 for an OS, I'd love to own win2k but I can deal with some instability. Not to mention I'd have to reinstall all KINDS of stuff, replace bookmarks, backup files. I'd probably be too lazy once I got it anyhow.

I've used win2k and am using 98se now, but I think I'll be switching back. My 98se install is as stable as it gets, but it's still not the same as win2k when it comes to memory management and TCP/IP. The only thing that was holding me back on 98se was the lack of ac3 support in 2k and laziness. :) I just got a stand-alone DVD player and a Sony Wega, so I don't think I'll be watching many movies on my PC anymore, so now it's just laziness.

BTW, even if you think your computer is as stable as it can be (never crashes), win2k is still better. Just try leaving your win9X system up for a week and you'll see.
