Schadenfreude
Lifer
Today, I was at the Asian Grocery store, running errands and whatnot, when I see this - well, it's not tin, but just a paper box. It's only 60 cents, but I'm really impressed by the design so I bought it - it's filled with an individually wrapped caramel derivative type candy, but that's besides the point - looking at this, if this was marketed in the US, it'd be sold in a plastic bag, nothing that catches the eye or novel in its design.
So it got me thinking - and I see a trend here with other consumer goods - and that is that the US design almost always seems very utilitarian compared to their foreign counterparts, it does in no way catch my eye; in other words, why does the product design pale in the US compared to foreign products?
Or is it that the theory of design is just different? Am I under the influence of "greener grass/other side of the pond/yadda yadda yadda" idea?
Your thoughts?
