POLL: Packaging Design

Today, I was at the Asian Grocery store, running errands and whatnot, when I see this - well, it's not tin, but just a paper box. It's only 60 cents, but I'm really impressed by the design so I bought it - it's filled with an individually wrapped caramel derivative type candy, but that's besides the point - looking at this, if this was marketed in the US, it'd be sold in a plastic bag, nothing that catches the eye or novel in its design.

So it got me thinking - and I see a trend here with other consumer goods - and that is that the US design almost always seems very utilitarian compared to their foreign counterparts, it does in no way catch my eye; in other words, why does the product design pale in the US compared to foreign products?

Or is it that the theory of design is just different? Am I under the influence of "greener grass/other side of the pond/yadda yadda yadda" idea?

Your thoughts?

The box I linked to? Well, frankly, I think so too - but that is not what I'm talking about - the simplicity of the product packaging is what made me buy it; in another word, it's novel.

And honestly, did you ever see something like taht walking down the aisle in Jewel? If you saw that, wouldn't it immediately catch your eye?

And the question goes past just packaging - everything from electronics, automobiles, to, yes, even food packaging is designed with a purpose.

I guess I should've known better to post a thread like this on a forum for tech-nerds . . . 🙁

Totally agree.

When I was in Taiwan, most of the suveniors I bought had very "attractive" outer designs. In the US, hell would have to freeze over if I ever walked into a Wal-mart and spent more than the item that I intended to buy.

In the US, packaging doesn't matter. We'll still take out mortgages to buy a bunch of useless junk regardless if the packaging is pretty or not 😉

I think I understand you now and I agree with you,in my opinion packaging can increase
a prduct sales dramatically.

Well, the fact that marketing in the US is a multi-billion dollar industry confuses me even more! I mean, you hear all sorts of marketing stunts corporations pull, but wouldn't it just be simpler if they just had a better package design? 😕
