Usually, debit cards are faster because the clerk doesn't have to do any counting.

I generally just have a couple dollars in case I end up at work late and have to get dinner from the vending machine. I buy everything with my debit card. I've got a cell phone and roadside assistance through Geico, so I'm pretty well covered in an emergency.
