I just reread my post and changed one place where I stated Quake2 to say Quake3, don't know if that changes your question Robo
I like Quake2 as an overall game the best, but for online play I place it last; makes sense to me
OK, I'll try to explain why-
Quake2 to me seems more real, in terms of how the actual gameplay is. It seems more like you
are a soldier placed into a situation and you need to realisticly deal with the situation at hand. It has more of that "Half-Life" kind of feel to it. It is more immersive to me, wraps me into the gameplay more.
The reason I don't like that for online is that I enjoy the surrealistic environs when fragging away at other people. As an overall game, I put Quake3 last, solely because of the sub par, no story line single player aspect. When playing online I want to blast away and enjoy some good old hectic DMs, or a frantic CTF match, not strategy(though oddly enough I am a "camper" who swears by the rail gun

).
Not to bring up HL too much, but quite frankly I don't care for the online aspect at all. No CounterStrike for me, it just doesn't get me "into" the game. I consider Half-Life to be hands down the best game ever made for the PC, I just look for very different styles when playing on line. When I play single player I want some objectives, not just go out there and kill. When I play multiplayer, the less objectives the better.
Because of my personal preferences, I place a
much higher level of importance on the single player game then I do multiplayer. When playing on-line, the oponents that you are playing against make up how fun the game is. Pretty much you have the engine and sometimes the level and the rest is up to the players. This leads to pretty hit or miss gaming IME. One player is a controlled environment, and is solely the responsibility of the game developers/designers.
Don't know if this cleared up anything at all, perhaps the reason I can't explain it in a better manner is that I'm not sure exactly why, haven't given it much thought(though I will now that you got me thinking

).

I honestly think that my post count has gone up over the last few weeks, just haven't been in the Video forum as much(and the posts I have had have mostly been brief). I bounce back and forth normally but I haven't had as much free time the last few weeks(or the next few, holidays are always fun

).
Side note-

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone
