Moving in time with a thread here that asks "what is the best videocard for quake2, I've decided to create a poll. Check it out and answer back.

Briefly describe why you picked what you picked. Take into account EVERYTHING. Single player mode, online mode, LAN mode, etc. If you never play multiplayer, then that's fine. If you ONLY play multiplayer, like me (never finished Q2), then so be it. Dowhachalike.

:)

Quake2, for the following reasons:

1) The railgun OWNS
2) The chaingun OWNS
3) RA2 OWNS
4) Lithium OWNS

:)

Never finished the single player cuz I thought it sucked. Got DSL about 2 months after I got Q2. Was busy playing against the eraser bots the entire time.

Quake1 gets my vote for best single player (loved the monsters, hated those space cadet enemies tho, thought those maps sucked). quake3 obviously has the best graphics and sound, but lacks in gameplay, IMHO.

My vote was for Quake2 also.

I agree that Quake3 is just not a very good game. It has cool graphics (most of the time) and good sounds, etc., but the game is boring to me. Just not enough to it.

Quake3 pretty much sucks in my opinion. It's so boring and the weapons are the same crap. UT has different game mods, cooler bots, better weps, etc...

Quake is my favorite though. First deathmatch, then ctf, then team fortress. A bit over a 4 year old game and it's still played quite a bit too.

I picked Quake2 because of the single player game and mods.

For online play, I would say Quake1, but as an overall game I have to give the nod to two. Purchasing the "QuadDamage" Quake2 set you can be set with roughly fifty hours or so of single player gaming, something that most current games are sadly lacking in(10hrs to complete is a joke).

I think that the single player aspect is the big difference between them(in terms if how I rank them). For multiplayer, I rank Quake2 last, Quake3 in the middle.

Quake1 is fast, very, very fast. If I was running on a LAN with a GHZ processor and a GF2U then I would likely place Quake3 higher, I do like the actual gameplay of Quake3 better. Can't explain it, maybe it is simply because it is new. Perhaps it is the less accurate physics model(if I wanted realism, I'd go play *realistic* paintball;)).

Quake2 I would put last in multi player mainly because it offers to me the worst parts of Quake1 and Quake3, though those are entirely preferential.

Ben, please expand. I found q2 to be completely different than Q1 or 3. Q1 and 3 are quite similar, actually

That' susually how it goes. Either someone likes Q2 or they hate Q2 and love Q1/3 (multiplayer), that is

BTW, welcome back Ben. Where ya been?

I just reread my post and changed one place where I stated Quake2 to say Quake3, don't know if that changes your question Robo:)

I like Quake2 as an overall game the best, but for online play I place it last; makes sense to me:)

OK, I'll try to explain why-

Quake2 to me seems more real, in terms of how the actual gameplay is. It seems more like you are a soldier placed into a situation and you need to realisticly deal with the situation at hand. It has more of that "Half-Life" kind of feel to it. It is more immersive to me, wraps me into the gameplay more.

The reason I don't like that for online is that I enjoy the surrealistic environs when fragging away at other people. As an overall game, I put Quake3 last, solely because of the sub par, no story line single player aspect. When playing online I want to blast away and enjoy some good old hectic DMs, or a frantic CTF match, not strategy(though oddly enough I am a "camper" who swears by the rail gun;)).

Not to bring up HL too much, but quite frankly I don't care for the online aspect at all. No CounterStrike for me, it just doesn't get me "into" the game. I consider Half-Life to be hands down the best game ever made for the PC, I just look for very different styles when playing on line. When I play single player I want some objectives, not just go out there and kill. When I play multiplayer, the less objectives the better.

Because of my personal preferences, I place a much higher level of importance on the single player game then I do multiplayer. When playing on-line, the oponents that you are playing against make up how fun the game is. Pretty much you have the engine and sometimes the level and the rest is up to the players. This leads to pretty hit or miss gaming IME. One player is a controlled environment, and is solely the responsibility of the game developers/designers.

Don't know if this cleared up anything at all, perhaps the reason I can't explain it in a better manner is that I'm not sure exactly why, haven't given it much thought(though I will now that you got me thinking:)).

"BTW, welcome back Ben. Where ya been?"-

In a place far, far away...

General Hardware;) I honestly think that my post count has gone up over the last few weeks, just haven't been in the Video forum as much(and the posts I have had have mostly been brief). I bounce back and forth normally but I haven't had as much free time the last few weeks(or the next few, holidays are always fun:)).

Side note- :D:D:D:DHappy Thanksgiving Everyone:D:D:D:D

I voted for Quake 3 because I love playing both multiplayer and bot matches. Quake 3 has a superb engine with lightning fast gameplay, and visual quality of the graphics is impressive. For the single player scenario I'd vote for Quake 2, but playing against the bots in Quake 3 is really fun as well. So overall Quake 3 is the best and hence it gets my vote.

Quake1
Quake3
Quake2

Quake1 had, and still has, the best multiplayer since DoomII IMO.
Fast, purely skillbased multiplayer, with great maps and weapons.
Sure, the RL is the best weapon, but its all part of the game, and its not like you're completely harmless with a shaft or super nailgun, especially not if you can get hold of a Quad.

Quake3 has far fancier graphics and much improved network code, though its a bit too slow, not nicredibly so though.
Overall, its better in some areas and worse in some areas, but the critical area where it falls short is gameplay.

Quake2 is incredibly slow, the weapons are sorta boring, and its overall gameplay sorta sucks.
Overall this game is like the worst of two worlds :)

Of course all of this is just my oppinions about multiplayer, but these games are multiplayer games IMO.

Quake 2 gets my vote because I like a little story behing the single player game, Quake 3 is not much more than ruinning around in circles and shooting, and while that can be fun at times it gets a bit repetitive fairly quickly.

This is why I really like Half-Life TFC and single player FPS like Dues Ex, Soldier of fortune, and no on lives forever.

BFG, very big shame

total blast.

I don't even bother playing the SP of Q2. I play against the bots. Great bot loader, and there's so many cool maps for q2.

best thing going is to play the old classic Q1 maps with Q2.

too cool <G>

I vote for Quake 2 simply cos it has a kickass mod... AQ2
The first mod I have seen with great gamplay and fast think rather than knee-jerk reactions. Another plus is you can run it on my old laptop at school(p266MMX 64MB ram no 3d). Unless youve been to a lan party, you dont know how damn fun it is to be in a room with 6 other guys on the same team agains 7 other guys from a different house. Dont know why they dont make it a school sport.

Quake2 single palyer was lame in my opinion and the original weapons were crap but it has a good engine and non-crappy netcode (which is another reason I refuse to play CS) and a kickass sniper you can run around with.

Another thing that made it fun was that the people in my school had morals and noone camped, used the shotgun, gave away positions when dead or looked at another persons screen. Led to some great games, especially sniper only rounds.

If you play CS and haven't seen Action Quake 2, I highly recomend you to give it a shot.

straight Q2 deathmatch Brother?

ever try "non-hook, non-rune" lithium DM?

Sounds bizarre at first, and you're like "WTF is the point"?

But the faster weapon switches and movement, and some of the "minor" tweeks you can do makes it quite a blast.

There was a server around here that I pinged great to that I played the no-hook/rune Lithium DM on, and loved it. I was one of the top 5. The dude that was the "top dog" (Ram{XLR8}) was just fuggin' awesome tho. Almost beat him once. Hehh.....once. Total psycho blast, especially on q2dm7

hmmm.....at this point in time, it seems that Quake2 is now tied with Quake1 and Quake3 COMBINED.

17 for Q2
17 for Q1 and Q3 combined.

heh....
