If you could pick one of these four competing stocks to buy and hold until the end of the year, which would it be, and WHY:

AAPL
RIMM
PALM
MOT

Just curious to see people's opinions. Yes, I realize there are lot more interesting stocks out there, but want to see what people think about these specific companies.
I think you can figure out the common thread...

Rimm! They are steadily growing users faster than anyone. Apple is going to miss their sales target on iphones obviously at this point, even if steve jobs covered the costs and sold them for $50 they wouldn't meet expectations at this point. Palm and motorolla would require a buyout to not suck.

none and put it in an index fund. unless you plan to actively track and research the companies you invest in (attending all of the quarterly meetings and news casts), you will just end up getting burned. also, it takes about 6 seconds for the price to adjust after bad news is announced.

Neither of your choices listed.
HPQ is my only tech stock of choice.

I see no reason to dabble into another tech stock when I can increase my mom's current holding in HPQ.

All those people chasing GOOG, APPL, RIMM, and many others can keep chasing them. I see no reason to take part in speculation.

While I'm still learning about investing (having finished Intelligent Investor recently), I'm not sure I understand what you mean by speculation; a tech stock is not inherently more "chancy" than other stocks (if you're singling tech stocks out).

If it has been volatile, it was only because people were overly enthusiastic with all things tech-related and failed to do their due diligence both before buying the stock and while monitoring their investment.

I'm merely singling out the tech stocks that get paraded all over the media.

FYI: HPQ is a tech stock. I have it.

if you have to choose one to hold the obvious choice is motorola. It's has the most diversified businesses, and least consumer of the four. If you didn't have to choose though, i would short all four.

Rimm or Appl. Rimm is steady and growing. Apple hit a slump but should make a return by the end of the year with another iphone release.

edit: Palm? Seriously? Im surprised their still in business....
