Senior administration officials say the speech was carefully crafted to rob the Al Qaeda leader and his terrorist network of some of its chief recruiting totems, including fears the United States plans a permanent presence in Iraq and Afghanistan. No-one can deny that the middle east is an extremely difficult situation with no great answers that make everyone happy. What do we here at AT think of his ideas. Letting Muslims know that we know we were wrong to follow Bush's policies, and also that we will never break our ties with Israel, and that Israel will NEVER go away... but also that Israel should concede some land to Palestine - which also has the right to exist.

Looking for a vote on the whole big picture, not just speach quality or bits and pieces of the plan, but the whole overall scheme.

I was just looking for a pos/neg response, not a million convoluted "ya but" answers. No one is 100% the same as anyone else on all aspects. If I had a middle option something to the effect of "I like this part but not that part" it would get almost all of the votes and really show nothing of value.

You want a different poll with more options? Make one, its easy. =)

Funny, I didn't have your reaction, didn't feel like I was being trapped, confined, or shoehorned into anything. It could be, however, because, while I have posted in a bazillion polling threads, I have not once ever checked off any of the options offered in any of them. I say what I want to say and ignore the poll.

In theory the form of Constitutional government given to us by the Enlightenment, and in my opinion deeply influenced by earlier Islamic enlightenment, is a far superior intellectual force to anything Al Quaeda, a violent and fanatical religious belief, can bring to the table, and that, on an intellectual level we ought not only engage them but will defeat them on that battle field.

But just as Al Qaeda is a sick form of a profound and deep religious insight into the human spirit, we too have lost our way. Just as Al Quaeda have perverted a religion of love, we have lost, in too many cases, our faith in the notion that all people are born equally with certain inalienable rights. Like Al Quaeda, which has fallen into the hands of satin in an absurd attempt to bring truth through violence, we have done the same. As Al Qaeda has failed to understand what Islam is, we have failed to practice what we preach. We have violated the human rights of others because we are cowards who do not really believe the truth we preach. Al Quaeda, on the other hand, acts fully in accordance with what they believe. In that respect they are better than us.
