Last year Amazon started charging state taxes because of a new law in the state. I somehow missed/didn't care about it, but was just about to order something for over $100 and that $9.something charge popped up and I was like wtf, so I froogled and bought the item elsewhere.

Of course, since I'm a good boy I will declare this at tax time.

I buy from Amazon just as much as I did before, but most things I do not pay taxes on as they are shipped to my apartment in Chicago. The only time I'm paying NY sales tax on Amazon stuff is when I have it shipped to my home in NY. No big deal.

If you purchase an item when in NY state and have it shipped to Chicago, do you still need to pay NY taxes on it? (technically?)

No, because the item isn't being imported or used in NY.

I still buy from Amazon every once in a while, but usually it goes to my home in MA. Only my GPS was shipped directly to NY, for the obvious reason.

Obviously he needed it to find his way to his home in MA.

I still order from Amazon, since I share a prime membership. If I didn't have prime, I probably wouldn't order as much as I do now.

Amazon and Newegg both have distribution from NJ, so selection and delivery of less than 24 hours on UPS 3 day keep me coming back (Amazon will sometimes intentionally sit on an order if I select free shipping with them, which is fine with me).

It's certainly better than the selection at the local big box.

Tax evader.

No, it is smart, as the money saved on paying no sales tax usually pays for the shipping cost. However when you have to pay sales tax and shipping you might as well go to a brick and mortar store because the shipping would most likely negate any price savings you may get on said item.

Well....

A) Its "smart" but its still illegal. Also Amazon offers free shipping on almost everything.
B) I don't actually care. Just amusing that winnar is evading taxes, because I'm sure he had a lot to say about all the democrat appointees (naturally he did, given his reply to me). The word for that is "hypocrite."

No problem with it. Technically, in MI you are supposed to claim Internet purchases and pay Use tax if the web site did not charge MI sales tax. So it just helps keep me legal and I do not have to track my Internet purchases.

No, not really. You assume that ordinary citizens and treasury secretaries are one and the same.
