since I am a Dallas fan, I loved it...12 wins, 1 loss this year in shootouts...too bad they won't use it in the playoffs...

I certainly don't mind it because of the entertainment value but it is a shame that players battle for 60 minutes and they lose a game put on 1 or 2 players' sticks. If I had to vote yes or no for shootouts, I'd still say yes. Ties are boring.

Shootouts is fine I think...though the Sharks absolutely suck at it.

The only thing I don't like is how if a game goes into OT or OT and shootout, it's all of a sudden a 3 point game. So if a team loses, they still get one point. I think that messes up the standings, especially close to the end of the season where teams are racing to make the playoffs. I think it should remain a 2 point game. It sucks when your team is trying to move up past a team ahead of you and you see that they lost, but since they lose in OT, you don't gain much ground because they still get 1 point.

what if your team is trying to catch up to the team ahead of them and your team loses in overtime? they are now 1 pt closer...works both ways....

I guess....but I think I'm more old fashioned. To me, a loss should just be a loss. If my team loses, they don't deserve a point. I think I like the tie system better. At least both teams splits the two points instead of 1 getting 2 and the other getting 1.

I think we should ban extra innings and just have a home run derby to decide baseball games.

Oh, and shootouts are the tool of Satan.

I say if tied after regulation have the team captains arm wrestle for the points.

Makes about as much sense. :)

As much as can be said about how they disregard the previous 60 minutes of play, I think it was necessary to regain viewership/attendance. It's very exciting to watch...I think it was a good move by the NHL.

Good idea, because it's exciting. There are definitely more pressing issues about the game of hockey at the moment, like the ridiculous(ly inconsistent) reffing.

The NHL is back? Thought that league went out of business... Guess that shows how much I care about hockey...

It's true. I have used that analogy many times myself. The shoot out is indeed exciting, and has its perks. I do think that the novelty will wear off quickly with as many shoot outs as there are now.

I don't want to see the shoot out gone as I do enjoy it. Kind of like a fine wine I guess, not something I want all the time. I would say lengthen the 4 on 4 OT to 10 minutes or so. But then you run into a problem with the ice becoming slush. I don't think that 5 minutes is enough time to really let the players do their thing. I think a lot of games could be resolved in that extra 5 minutes. This keeps the shoot out around, but rarer, as to not wear it out. It is also fairer to the players/teams so that the game is decided on the team, not the individual.
