I ran across a good summary of the terms:
http://www.urbandictionary.com...erm=geek&defid=1939356

One of four titles used to classify someone based on their technical and social skills. The other three titles are nerd, dork, and normie. The difference between the four titles can be easily shown in table form:

................ Technical ...... Social
Title ............ Skills ......... Skills
---------- ---------------- ------------
Normie ......... No ............. Yes
Geek ........... Yes ............. Yes
Nerd ............ Yes ............. No
Dork ............ No .............. No

Normie: A normal person. Blah.

Geek: An outwardly normal person who has taken the time to learn technical skills. Geeks have as normal a social life as anyone, and usually the only way to tell if someone is a geek is if they inform you of their skills.

Nerd: A socially awkward person who has learned technical skills due to the spare time they enjoy from being generally neglected. Their technical knowledge then leads normies to neglect them even further, leading to more development of their technical skills, more neglection, etc. This vicious cycle drives them even more into social oblivion.

Dork: A person who, although also socially awkward, doesn't have the intelligence to fill the void with technical pursuits, like a nerd, and is forced to do mindless activities. Almost always alone. Usually with an XBox. Like playing Halo. All day. Every day. Not even understanding how the Xbox is making the pretty pictures on the screen. Very sad.

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.
A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.

I said geek because I fall closer to that than nerd. I'm not socially awkward.

I've always thought I was a nerd who was good at hiding the fact that I'm a nerd... According to this, I'm just a geek.

I am bad with the ladies, but I do socialize. I've got friends. I go to the gym. I play soccer. I would say I'm more geek than nerd. Oh, and of course I got the tech/science skills.

A nerd is someone whose life revolves around computers and technology. A geek is someone whose life revolves around computers and technology, and likes it!

I disagree with your definition of a geek.

According to that definition I would be considered a geek.

Here's the catch though. I couldn't give a shit less about computers (at least personally). Not anymore. I use them as a tool to get a job done. In my spare time I'm no where near a computer.

I'm very technically strong and I socialize.

I would consider myself a jock since I love to play sports.

A geek wouldn't be caught saying what I said above :p

I'm safely stowed away in the nerdly corner of this particular multi-dimensional spectrum.

You say you're a jock but are technically strong. Jocks are not technically strong. You have to remember that jocks in general terms are dumb but good at sports and get all the wimmenz.

I am a "nerd" according to the definitions you posted, but I have traditionally referred to myself as a geek.

Should I also mention that all those labels are a state of mind?

And I've met jocks which can be smart too, I've known quite a few who ended up becoming engineers.

In any case, I find those labels above to be too simplistic. They are too vague.

But they are stereotypes and I think you're taking this thread a little too serious. Do you believe a Nerd is someone who is very technical but can't be social?

Believe it or not, there are some folks who actually fit in that category.

Some of them rather do research and improve their intellect then socalize.

They find bars, clubs, social (non-technical) gatherings, etc a waste of time.

*shrug*

To me, both geeks and nerds have no social skills, but nerds are smart at everything while geeks are only good at technical stuff.

However, I fit under geek in this poll.
