my friend is on a budget($400) and i suggested the Shuttle AN35N-Ultra. my other friend insists that he gets the gigabyte board. i told him the extra $12 is NOT worth it. he insists that it is a faster board than the shuttle for some weird reason(they are the same chipset, so how can one be significantly faster than the other?!)

Shuttle in question.

Gigabyte in question.

For a super-budget board I'd get the shuttle. Check out AMDMB forums. People are getting great overclocks with it.

You don't have an option for the best Nforce2 board ever made: the Abit-NF7-S! Nothing beats it for features and overclockability!:)

Hell yeah. I'd take a NF7 over either of those boards. The NF7 has a 5 bit multiplier encoder, so you can adjust the multi's on unlocked chips in the BIOS. It also has better sound. But whatever, simply saying one board is 'better' than another is pretty stupid. Pick the one that has the features you want.

Silly rabbit.....the Gigabyte board has much more pretty colors, and therefore worth the extra $12. :D

Shuttle.

To overclock, CPU is more important than the mobo. Even NF7-s cannot overclock some 2500+ to 3200+.

Avoid Gigabyte, they skimp on components , e.g. noisy cheap filters, missing molex connectors, only 1 fan connection...etc

faster no, but the GB has the usb bracket.
For Shuttle: cheap.
For GB: USB bracket, and you can RMA thriugh Newegg.
I like my DFI NFII Ultra-AL, but if you have a fixed $400 budget, get the AN35N-Ultra. Faster CPU and RAM and a nice PSU will matter more, most likely.

Shuttle is a better board IMO. I recommend them all the time to budget minded people I know.

of the 2 in question I would go with the Shuttle , been great boards for me. OC very well, never had much luck OCing on a Gigabyte board of any kind.

I have that Shuttle board. Absolutely killer without any problems for the last year and half or so. Was able to OC a 2500+ to 3200+ on stock HSF. Wow.

Sorry, but the price/stability/performance crown in my case goes to Epox. I get my CPU 2674@2V (12.5x214) completely stable on this board without any modding, etc. She sure is a beautiful board.

Honestly the Shuttle board is way too basic for my taste. I'm willing to pay a bit more to get firewire and SATA, especially considering how cheap motherboards are.

Personally I think both are pretty decent boards. Biggest difference i can see looking at them Is the GB has 4 USB connectors in the rear + the usb cable for a total of 6 and no gameport. GB also has 4 dimm slots and is very colorful if that matters. I like the Power connector and IDE/Floppy connector layout better on the GB as well. The AGP slot location is better on the GB and the cpu socket isn't right up against the top edge of the board like the shuttle. Haven't used either one of them but I haven't seen anything bad about them either. I think i would actually have to tip my hat to the GB for the better layout. To me the better layout would be worth the 12 bucks but If that isn't a possiblity for himI think the Shuttle would also serve him well.

EDIT - Just looked over the Epox EP-8RDA3I and have to say for $58 bucks i would go for that over the Shuttle.
