I think that I may have pinned down my computer problem. After combining this forum with my own obsessive compulsiveness, I have diagnosed the disease I have named obsessive compulsive upgrading syndrome. I am forming a support group.... Actually my personal dilemna is that I really want to overclock but my mobo (AZ11)but it doens't support FSB overclocking and it doesn't have any vcore, multiplier settings. I want to get a new motherboard, but I can't justify it, since I already have a 1GHZ thunderbird and my next upgrade (scheduled obsessively for 11/01 when the palomino desktop should be purchaseable) isn't ofr a while. I should shut up, huh.

Welcome to The Club! The Next Big Thing you spend you cash on, will be The Latest Old News approximately two weeks after you get it. I am afflicted w/the same disease. No cure, but treatment (self control) works. Very, very difficult, though!

the Tbird's voltage and multiplier can be changed by cutting and rejoining traces around the chip if you don't have a real OC board. find this sort of thing at tomshardware or overclockers.com

Ooog. I've personally kept this disease at bay for a while now. But I know it only takes a few latest games that runs poorly on my system for this disease to recur!

I definitely had this disease for a while. I was spending approximately $150/month on computer parts for 3-4 months. Now I've got some self control and I have a handle on the situation. But I can see it starting again in August when the GF3 goes down in price.

Treatment? Find something to do. Work, school, a new girlfriend, something! Occupy your free time and there will be less of an urge to get online and look for all the Hot Deals and price out a current CPU+mobo+memory combo. Situation becomes harder if you're at work and constantly have net access with some free time. But hey, at least you'll be working, hence making money to pay for the good deals right?

It is so true. I start a new job today... at Best Buy, an electronics retailor. The truth is that you spend 3 hours scouring the web to save 5 dollars on something, then realize that you could have made $30 working.

Us photographers have a name for it: GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome)

Everytime we buy something new, we PASS GAS!
