*POLL* - NBA extends first round playoffs series to best-of-7.

Instead of the first round of the playoffs being a best-of-5 affair, now it's expanding to a best-of-7 format, in likeness with the rest of the playoffs.

I personally don't like it, because the best-of-5, to me, gets rid of the shotty teams quickly. Or, on the otherhand, if they have a good 2 or 3 game spurt where they are just playing like mad, they have a better chance to advance, depending solely on the amount of games they have to win to advance.

Of course, I don't guess it really matters either way. I just have to have an opinion about everything. :)

Ghey. The first round playoffs are already pretty stacked w/ the record best vs the record worst in the playoffs. Keep it short, no need for making the playoffs even longer.

The concession is shorter training camps and more $$$$ for the players...

this sucks. first rounds often suck anyways but now there's less of a lower team catching a top team off guard.

I can't understand why they would want to extend the first round to best of 7. Like people have said, the playoffs are already drawn out. In what other sport, do you have to go through 3 rounds of best of 7 starting with 16 teams? Its rediculous. Added to the fact that last year, they scheduled the games to coincide with weekends to get maximum television exposure, which led to the playoffs taking forever! Can't the NBA learn from the superbowl? People want to see quick results, not something which takes over a month to decide.

This will just make the 1/8 and 2/7 pairings unbearable to watch. Many are over by Game 3 anyway - literally.
There may be some interesting 3/6 and 4/5 pairings, though.

The net effect is that this will all but eliminate that chances of lower seed teams advancing. The better team will always win a 7 game series.

As an aside, what was the lowest seeded team to ever win an NBA Championship?

That was my Houston Rockets. :D They were the 6th seed in 1994-1995.

I don't like it...a waste of time. Wait till the playoffs and count how many series outcomes are affected by the extra games. My money says none.

The article never really gives a reason. Is it strictly $$$? Why didn't the article just come out and say it. "Both the league and the players will benefit financially. There is no other reason."

I usually don't even tune in to a first round serious until its tied 2-2, or the underdog is up 2-0 or 2-1. This means there will be a few more games that I likely won't be watching.

If the nba is so good for the networks, why is the darn allstar game on tnt and not one of the 3 major networks. I don't get it. :frown:

I think he means it is because the Lakers have swept so many opponents and the NBA loses revenue on sweeps that now they are forcing them to play more games.

Hyping International Players also brings TONS of cash to the NBA.

Extending Playoffs brings more CASH to the NBA

I am getting sick of David Stern meddling too much with the game just to earn a buck.

Also, if they wanted to make the playoffs more "fair" they would change the NBA Finals to 2-2-1-1-1 instead of 2-3-2.

The NHL. You have to go through 4 rounds to win the Stanley Cup.

I don't complain about that, but maybe thats just because hockey is actually fun to watch.

Also, if they wanted to make the playoffs more "fair" they would change the NBA Finals to 2-2-1-1-1 instead of 2-3-2

The best format is 2-2-1-1-1
