Ok, needed to start a clean thread for this specific problem :) . I have a K7T Pro2-A, and, like many other people I've seen on these forums, I tried to use the Live BIOS utility MSI included with the board to update to the latest beta BIOS (as it enables 4-way interleaving) under Windows 2000 Pro. About 1% into flashing, it stopped and gave me an error, followed by rebooting the machine. Upon rebooting, it made a 3 second series of "normal" tone beeps, followed by a pause, then rapid, higher pitched beeps (which continued until the power button was held down for 4 seconds to turn it off). I tried several times to get it to boot again, but with no success. Being reminded about the boot block, I unplugged everything but the floppy drive, and removed all cards and put in an old PCI video card (tried several, from Diamond to Tseng Labs' ET4000). I also made a boot disk on another machine, with an autoexec.bat file to automatically flash the BIOS and reboot without prompting (version 2.2). I put the floppy in, turned on the machine, and was about to cry tears of joy when I saw the boot block, but that joy soon came to an end...

...followed by endless, rapid, high-pitch beeping (similar to the 2nd set of beeps on the first reboot). I tried removing the video card, but then I got the two sets of beeps I first heard. Next I tried swapping floppy drives. No success. I tried different brands, different cables, different power supplies, and made sure they were all connected correctly, but I never found a problem with those things. Clearing the CMOS did no good either. It never even attempted to seek the floppy drive. Before this happened, the floppy controller on the board did in fact work, so that can't be the problem... or can it?
How many of you Anandtech readers have experienced this problem? If you have, did you try different things to get it to work? Did you ever get it to work in the boot block? I'm afraid MSI overlooked the boot block this time, or didn't modify it for the updated 686B south bridge, which is causing numerous problems. In this thread, I'm not looking for ways to restore the BIOS, as I already have ordered a new chip, but rather to find out if this floppy drive problem is widespread, in ALL of the KT7 Pro2-A boards. I would also like to find out if anyone has had this problem, and resolved it without buying a new BIOS chip or doing a hot swap-n-flash (as I do not have access to a board with this style chip). Any info would be greatly appreciated.
*REMINDER* - PLEASE only post in this thread if (a) you know of a resolution to the floppy drive problem, or (b) you are experiencing this problem. Treat it as a poll of sorts, stating that you have the problem and if you fixed the floppy drive (and how you did it), or if you were unable to fix it.
Thanks! If this is truly widespread, it will be neccessary to bring it to the attention of the public, as well as to MSI (so they don't think it is only a problem on a few boards).

I have not had any problems with my floppy controller on my k7t pro 2a. I would however strongly suggest against using the LiveBios method of flashing your bios. I have heard nothing but problems about it. Personally, I'm running Win 2k with bios ver 1.9, and I'm having no problems, so I'm not going to flash the new versions, unless I run into a problem (new theory to me, I've always like having the newest drivers)

I just bought the K7T Pro2-A yesterday and have been having the exact problem that you are referring to. The only difference is that I have not flashed the BIOS. I took it out of the box and hooked it up and had to listen to that god-awful beeping noise. Even if this was some sort of floppy error, why in the heck would it halt the system? I tried many things to make it work, but to no avail. I was hoping to find someone who had made it work on here. I will take this board back tomorrow to see what the store has to say.

Whoa, out of the box? Seems like they sent you a bad board. Somebody probably experienced this problem and RMA'd the board with that company, and they happened to send it to you. I used to work for a company who did that, where when something was returned, it was repackaged and put back on the shelf as new. Customers would happen to buy it and bring it back, so it would float around for a while until someone decided to RMA it with the manufacturer. I hate it when companies do that, as it really screws over the unlucky few. Try to return the board and, if possible, let MSI know.

Hi aNtHrAx323,Richard here.
I used live bios on my K7T PRO 2-A also and whacked my bios, bootblock and all.
After I tried live bios I got an error so instead of shutting down I ran live bios detection again and it stated I still had my original bios.
I was relieved until I tried to reboot, beep-beep-beep-beep etc, etc.

Forget support.
I ended up buying another board and booted it into windows, put in whacked bios and flashed it with ver. 2.4.
Then put original bios back in, both work great again.
You could could use a boot disk to get into dos and flash it also.
Their is an auto flash program in the download too.
Im going to sell the new board next week so if anyone needs a bios flashed until then let me know.

Exactly what happened to me, but I didn't have another board, so I dropped $40 on a new chip shipped overnight to meet a deadline for a system I was building. And how much are you selling your board for? It's a great board IMHO despite its problems. E-mail me if you need a buyer :) .

Just wanted to let you know that I returned the board to the store I bought it at and made them test it so they knew what I was talking about. The girl said, "Hmm, I don't know what's wrong" and then simply replaced the board for me. I'm now a happy camper with my MSI + 850 tbird combo. I've been trying to stress the system by compressing a few dvds to divx. The system performed flawlessly. Now it's time to crank up the speed. I haven't overclocked any tbirds yet. Do I just unlock the CPU and then use that program distributed by MSI called Fuzzy logic? Anyone have experience with this program?

Fuzzy Logic will just raise the FSB....You need to unlock the chip to get good results.
