EDIT: see my response at the bottom
see question description for what i do
ok guys here is my system

Maxtor 80gb 5400rpm 2mb buffer (i use less than 11gb)
asus a7n8x deluxe (rev 1.04)
athlon xp 1700 (T-Bred A) highest stable o/c is 1.666ghz on a 333fsb
2 X 512mb cosair xms pc3200
geforce4 TI4200 128mb 8x

either or. which is more likely to drop in price in the next few months. or should i wait?

The Barton 2500+ is already under 100 dollars. I don't forsee the price going down anymore than that for atleaset the next few months.

I would have said 2500+ (wow and I was mad I couldn't hit 1.85 with My TbredA) but it seems you are complaining more about load times so Raptor it is. I don't see any complaints that the game itself is laggy

Though you can toss on an extra 45 and get a better 1700+ 😉

I reckon you will see the biggest increase in performance for general windows stuff, and game loading etc from the Raptop hdd. If you're only using 11gb, then 36gb of the Raptor will be fine for you 🙂

The XP2500+ is bound to come down in price later on, whereas the Raptor may still stay reasonably expensive.

Confused

Go with the 2500. BF load times suck even on my Atlas 10K III SCSI drive.

On the other hand since the posts below me pointed out you're running a 5400RPM drive. The Raptor would provide a better all around performance increase. Wish I could change my vote. Next time I'll read the thread a little slower. 😉

I don't think the processor upgrade is significant enough to be of much use. Sure it may be slightly noticible - but it just is too small of a bump. If you are already upgrading a 1700+ it seems like you won't keep the 2500+ very long either. So I'd have to say it will be a short lived small speed bump. Thus if I were you I'd wait on the processor side (unless you can find a sucker to pay a lot for your old 1700+ chip to offset the cost).

As for the hard drive is that 5400rpm correct? If so you will notice a dramatic improvement when going to a Raptor. Plus the Raptor can move on to your next machine and life a long useful life.

ok, i decided to get the raptor, so i confronted my dad (the keeper of the visa) about ordering it from newegg and he said that i would see no signifficant differance in load times with the 10,000 rpm versus the 5400 rpm. he works in Information Technology, for like more than 10 years. so i guess he know better than i do. and he is not doing this becuase of money, i have enough in the bank to write him a check. btw, i would get in huge trouble if i were to side step him about ordering the thing.

hell yeah, on my 120GB WD SE it sucks. i'm not sure why that game loads to slowly, maybe it's rendering or decompressing etc.

You are running a piss poor 5400 RPM drive

his drive may be poor but it's not why his bf1942 load times blow😉

how about this....... a new XP1700 and a raptor, then sell the old XP1700.

I voted Barton.

While the 5400RPM HDD is somewhat of a bottleneck in your system, moving up to a 7200RPM w/ 8MB cache will do just fine without the extreme cost for the 36GB Raptor. The 2500+, on the other hand, could probably be set to run at 400MHz FSB at over 2GHz, giving you a very significant performance boost (and taking advantage of that all that fast RAM you have!). Not to mention it's only $87 shipped from NewEgg right now. If your HDD is still bothering you, grab a Western Digital Caviar w/ 8MB cache in a few months, which can be had for around or under $100.
