I was never a HUGE stooges fan.

But "Duck Soup" is by far one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. (Marx Brothers.)

yup, and the political commentary added a bit of intelligence to the film :)

I have to wonder about people who mention choices which aren't part of the poll.

Anyway, while I'm big fans of both the Marx brothers and the Stooges, the Stooges win out.

The Marx brothers made about a dozen movies in less than 20 years. The Stooges did 190 shorts spread over 40 years. Winner: Stooges.

The Marx brothers had one member who actually had a long career (Groucho). The Stooges had two (Moe and Larry. The third guy kept dying). Winner: Stooges.

The Marx brothers had four brothers in the act. So did the Stooges. Winner: Tie

The Marx brothers films are rarely seen today. The Stooges are still being shown on TV. Winner: Stooges.

The Marx brothers films have long periods of not-funny content. The Stooges films do not. Winner: Stooges.

Harpo wore a wig and Groucho painted his mustache on. The Stooges were all natural. Winner: Stooges.

As far as movies go, the Stooges. As far as general wit and humor, though, well -- read my sig. ;)

Nice breakdown...

The reason for the "long periods of not-funny content" is because they were movies and not shorts.

Harpo played the harp, Chico played the piano, Groucho sang... Overall talent: Marx Brothers

Both groups are definitely awesome, but I admit I haven't seen a better comedy than the Marx Brother's Duck Soup...

Stooges were just slapstick, unbelievable circumstances.

Marx Brothers actually had a style.

Now, I love the Stooges (that episode where Curly ends up in a cage of plumbing pipe in a bathtub is classic!) but the Marx Brothers were, imo, the first evolutionary step out of vaudeville.

I never cared the Stooges, but if you watch closely, the Marx Brothers had some very funny intellectual humor and social commentary in their dialog. :)

Marx Brothers was the thinking man's show:
"I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got in my pajamas, I don't know. I tried to take out the tusks, but they were in real tight. So I went to Alabama, there the tusks are looser."

Stooges just had lots of bad gags, physical comedy, and plots a 3-year old can understand:
"I'd like you to meet my sister Lorna Doone."
"Hi Lorna, how ya doin'?"

actually, the marx brothers made a fair number of stage and radio productions, and many of their movies were based on those, so you can't fault them for having produced "less" work.

and most of the not-funny content was musical in nature. the marx brothers were extremely talented musicians, and i could watch harpo or chico play for hours on end. winner: marx bros.

and last but not least, there were 5 marx brothers, not 4. chico, harpo, groucho, gummo, and zeppo.

Well, on the other hand I don't give them credit for doing the same thing over again, either. ;)

Good point. Larry of the Stooges was a talented piano and violin player, but after that, you're down to Curly playing the spoons.

and last but not least, there were 5 marx brothers, not 4. chico, harpo, groucho, gummo, and zeppo.

I only counted the brothers who made movies. Gummo Marx wasn't in the act, and neither were Jack or Irving Horwitz (the other brothers on the Stooges side). And I counted wrong anyway, there were three brothers in the Stooges act, not four. So it should be Winner: Marx brothers.
