Frankly, I wouldnt do it any other way. After 14 years we are still together. All of our friends who blew huge wads of cash on overly extravagant weddings are all divorced.

My wife disclosed to me after one of her friends divorced her husband, that her parents had spent $35,000 on her wedding, it lasted all of 14 months, great investment.

a buddy of mine got married last summer. they spent about 30k on there wedding. then about 8 months after that they almost got a divorce!

they just had there 1 year anaversiary and things seem to be going good.

Originally wanted to have a wedding, with reception over 1/3 of the country away. Didn't work out. Too far away to try and organize stuff...troubles finding a reception hall, troubles finding someone to perform the ceremony, problems with family wanting things done different, yadda yadda yadd.

So we said screw it. Went to the travel agent, said "book us two flights to the carribbean, and get us married down there". Next day, we went to the travel agent, plopped down the cash and got set up a with a weeks stay at a Sandals resort in Antigua.

All we had to do was the day before our wedding show up at the wedding coordinator's office for 10 minutes. We picked out where we wanted to get married, what sort of cake we wanted, what color of flowers we wanted, what we wanted for dinner that night, what we wanted for breakfast the next morning, and what songs we wanted for the wedding. That's it. Nothing else.

I got dressed half hour before the ceremony, showed some people we met at the resort how to run my camera and camcorder, and got married half an hour later.

One of the best decisions we've ever made. Couldn't be happier with the way it turned out.

Originally had a wedding planned. Got pissed off with the relatives and planning and decided to hop a plane for Maui. It was going to be our honeymoon anyway - we just left early and got hitched on the beach at sunset instead. Was able to (via internet) rent a tux, rent a room, rent a car, rent a photographer, rent a videographer, rent a JP.

In retrospect it was the right thing to do. I think you need to be out of your mind to blow 10 or 20k on a party. Better spent on a house.
