Poll: Mac or PC

Heck yes I'm brave enough. Remember, I put out more blocks than JonB with only 6 Macs.😉

My problem with Mac is the limited amount of programs (apps & games) that are released for it.

Oh, and I *HATE* those stupid "Switch" commercials. They need to fire the marketing team that did them. :|

My main problems with Macs are: 1) the limited software selection (though with a UNIX base now that might not be as much of a problem); and 2) the expense and proprietariness (is that even a word? 😉) of the hardware. Yea, you can get an iMac for the same price as a Dell system, but the Dell system will have better hardware, and will be faster (despite the "tweaked" Photoshop benchmarks that Steve Jobs likes to push). Aside from that I will always build my systems unless there is a compelling reason to buy them pre-built (get an old SGI Octane 2? Sure, the coolness factor is very great; but is there really any big reason to pay more for a Mac?).

Oh yea, if you couldn't figure it out already, I run my DC projects only on PCs. 🙂

Your running OS 10.2 on a G3 powerbook? Ouch! OS 10.2 needs some serious hourse power and I don't think your G3 is gonna cut it.

I am running with only x86 based machines right now becuase there is not ECCp client for MACs. If there was I could get two dual G4 1Ghz and about five G4 400 Mhz and a dozen or some 400Mhz G3s!!!! But I would have to travel to my home town to set that up...

Come next year when apple will finaly have a new processor I might switch my main rig over to a mac.

But for cracking? I will have to go with the x86. I can't buy a mac motherboard/CPU and make a crack rack out of them... At least not as cheap as a x86 system. And when you are just cracking numbers the OS doesn't really matter.

I'd love to check out the Jaguar OS. I've heard such great things about it. One of these days I'm going to have to take a walk on the wild side and get meself a Mac.

Games are a problem, but Mac OS X has a great selection of applications.

If they got you that emotional, they should get a raise. They are doing their job and doing it well based on the number of threads and posts talking about the advertizing 😉

*note, I only crack on my x86 based machines. I have a g3 iBook running Mac OS X but it is not always running, and an ultra 10 that has not found a DC client yet, if anyone know what ultrasparc 2s are good at, let me know 😉

They are expensive, but the software you get with the system is more than worth it. And most of the hardware is standard. The CPUs infact conform to a standard designed by Apple, IBM, and Motorola.

When I was in the market for a notebook the iBook was the best deal I could find. I was interrested in Mac OS X anyways, so I bought one. I could not find another notebook that offered the features, size, or price the iBook gave me. Its not the fastest, but I bought it for portability, not speed 😉

PC for me 🙂

Last Mac I was on was one of those funky colored iMac's a couple years ago at school, those things made me sick.

Seems that the SETI project has some clients for the SPARC stuff, but I don't know anything about the various processors in that architecture and the OSes that run on them, so that client might not even work for you.

Slightly OT, but where did you go to get an Ultra 10? I've been interested in finding some older computer to use for a *BSD experimentation box, and if it's a strange and different architecture, that's even better. 🙂 I've only seen a few small websites that claim to sell refurbished old workstations like that, but I'm not sure if their reputation is any good or not.

well i upgraded the ram to the max, and the hard drive from 2gb to 10gb. i stripped it totally apart when i got it, just eyeing what it's made of. btw, it just uses ordinary pc100 ram 😉 and a ibm thinkpad hard drive right now. 😉 pretty simple. 🙂 i have osx and ms office.v on it, it's ok for running word, terminal, port scanner, and email.

anyone know of any good free apps/utilities - i'm a mac noob. 😀

I got my sparcstation 10 from ebay but it isnt working right now (worked when I got it). I got the ultra 10 from a friend, who was going to ebay it. You can get a fairly new, low end ultrasparc for under $1000USD. NetBSD and OpenBSD are the only BSDs that run on them (unless you count older Sun OS releases 😛).

currently, I'm running 3 PC's and 1 MAc, a G4 400mhz, interesting little machine. I got it for free and I use it every now and then...

I think it can run OSX but i don't have the spare change to try it out...

🙂

It sure could! You should figure a way out to get ahold of it. I am sure there are some companies that have copys of OS 10.1 that they don't need anymore. 🙂

I get all of my becasue I am a developer. 🙂 I even have a copy of nexstep and Raphsody!
