Poll! Laugh or Cry? My fiancee might win a car.

Jzero

Lifer
My fiancee has a 1 in 30 chance of winning this car on Friday.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

I think if she wins she will have the option of taking the car (personally riced out by Chris Carrabba with absolutely ZERO performance modifications (I don't count the wheels and exhaust)) or a standard Civic EX. ARV of the Dashmobile? $42,644. ARV of an EX Civic? $18,150

What would you do?

In a perfect world, I'd want the Alpine Sound System in an EX Civic. I'd love to be able to keep the change, but I'm pretty sure that's not part of the deal.

Unfortunately, unless the Dashmobile would sell for close to the ARV, the tax would actually break us!

I'd take the rice and sell it.

You think it would sell for much, though?
It's a conundrum - a collector might pay dearly for it, except what kind of people collect Dashboard Confessional ephemera? Teenie boppers. What kind of money do teenie boppers have? Not much 😀

We would have to probably net around $18k just to pay the taxes, let alone make a profit on it....

If you win the ricer, will they specifically state that the car is value @$42K and you'll have to pay the taxes on the $42K.

Or....you'll sell the car and whaever you bring in, you get taxes on that amount.
Thats what usually happen on normal car transactions anyhow.

So if the taxes is around 40%.
You figure taxes is about $7200 on the $18K car so you're netting $9K cause you can buy an EX for around $16K.
And taxes will be about $16,000 on the $42K car so you need to sell it for about $25K to net about the same profit.

I don't see that car selling more than $25K if there is 0 performance mods.

How about taxes? Don't you have to pay tax on the +$42k Honda if you win it?

IF Yes THEN take stock Civic.

Yes! Exactly my fear. You can figure 30-40% of the value in taxes, that's $12k-$16k. Between paying for a wedding and a house, we can't afford to donate that kind of money to the government if the Dashmobile doesn't sell.

We could afford the tax on the stock Civic. In fact, we could sell one of our existing Civics to pay the tax and keep the new one 😎

??? They make more than one "dashmobile"

Yeah, although I think their banking on most of the winners opting out of it. hahaha!

Tonight we discussed the most non-intuitive plan - collect the stock EX, sell it, pay the tax, keep the remaining $12k for credit card bills/house down payment/wedding expenses.
It seems counter-intuitive to sell the brand new Civic in lieu of keeping the '97 Civic w/ 100k miles, but the old car has sentimental value and is in very good condition, and the cash would be more useful than a car...

Of course, that's even if she wins the ScreaMobile on Friday! 😀

I honestly, would wedge a board on the gas pedal and run it into a wall at 80+ mph, and film it. I would invite whoever you won it from to come out and watch. I don't currently need the money, and the fame I would recieve would be more than worth the 14k.

Sell pieces on Ebay to cover the tax.
