Poll: laptop computer

sometime soon, i'm inevitably going to have to purchase a laptop computer. i do a lot of work with digital pictures, and the main camera i use is a sony mavica w/ a floppy disk for writing the images. would a really good laptop be able to function as a desktop replacement (800Duron, 256MB RAM, SBLive Plat, etc....)? It would need to have a good sound system as i need to connect it to the school auditorium's sound system, and need a good video output to connect it to the projection system. more requirements would be: DVD/CD-RW (both in one unit is fine), floppy disk drive, good batt power. final req is being able to run W2k and W98 both. can all of this be done? if so, where should i get it? (see poll)

Thank You!

I don't know if you can buy a Duron notebook yet - I know the mobile Duron has been out for 2 weeks or so though.

If you must buy a notebook right now, I'd recommend a Dell Inspiron 8000. Yes, its a Pentium III but it has a gorgeous 15" display, 815 chipset, and a firewire port. I think you can also get a 5400 RPM drive with it.

But be warned, this thing is expensive!

seems to be a common problem. people start responding before you have the poll done yet!

lol

thanx

I have an i8000 loaded to the roof with a 32GB 5400rpm IBM HDD....sweeeeeet. 😉

i have vaio pcgf690, my friend has dell i8000. we swapped for a couple of days and we both agreed that aside from personal preference, they're roughly comparable, with either having plus/minus features that balance them out.

I completely forgot about Sony when I created the poll😱

It's added...

Thanx for voting!

Anyone else wanna post to the thread? The more the merrier...

My company gave me a Toshiba Tecara 8100, its a P3600 with the Savage MX graphics chipset, Its actually cool to be able to play Q3 on my laptop, oh yes its a great computer otherwise also.

I would say the IBM ThinkPad A21P's since those are like the elite machines.... heh. The Dell i8000 is good except it doesn't have the build quality of the IBM's.

Just remember that very few of the companies make all their own laptops, and even if they do make that particular one, the quality will vary. Furthermore, the appropriateness for your specific use will be different.

Anyways, I have a Sceptre Soundx 69002 with 15" TFT screen and 256 RAM. That is the exact same machine as the Dell Inspiron 5000 for cheaper (since Dell buys them from the company who owns Sceptre), but Dell's warranty and tech support is better.
