I think I'd just throw it in the leather briefcase and be done with it, but whatever...

Well sometimes I carry it by itself to meetings without my larger bag. Or I move around my office or visit a colleague, etc. And it could easily slip from my hand if I am just dragging it around. Not to mention the other reasons I noted above. Most people don't realize it's a notebook until I open it, so it's also discreet and less likely to be grabbed.

Reminds me of people who buy fitted camera cases, and throw that in a camera bag. I've never done that, and never will. I just don't get it.

Normal backpack with my own pouch sewn in...no one knows it's a laptop bag...less likely to get stolen...

*If* I have my briefcase I do. Most of the time I do not carry my briefcase to meetings, so 80% of the time I carry it by itself.
Pray tell, how does it get to and from work 100% of the time?

Just as I said above (and over several responses).

You take it to work, without the briefcase, how often?

It depends on what I have planned for the day and if the required files are on my desk or are at home. On average, I carry it solo 2 days a week. But once I get to work (a fifiten minute walk) I tend to carry it around with me throughout the day. For example, I may have meetings in different buildings and only need a few files. So more often then not I am carrying it around without any other bag. And, for the resons I listed earlier, I vastly prefer this to carrying it with no cover at all. In fact, I would not consider that.

i have a folded up towel in the bottom of my backpack, to help protect the lappy a bit. it's hard to ride a bike w/ the messenger bag ones. i find backpacks much more comfortable. not as "stylish" but much more comfortable.

I have an Eddie Bauer messenger bag that provides some decent protection on it's own, but I put a neoprene laptop condom into the part that holds the lappy. Works out great and has withstood some pretty severe punishment.
