we started out with seperate accounts (long long time ago) but my husband never has really grasped the fact that the money from the ATM comes out of the balance.. so after he bounced the same check 3 times (long long time ago) I took his checking account away (this was in.. '80).. and we've joint accounts ever since. I trained hiim to give me ATM receipts.. if a machine gives you money, it also gives you a piece of paper. you MUST give me that piece of paper, every time, or I will take that piece of plastic that makes money come out.. couple years ago he got good enough about turning them in that I told him his ATM card would also work at the gas pump. it was not a good decision on my part.. he really does know the atm doesn't give free money now, but sometimes I think he must think that card gets free gas. long as I make sure there's a month's worth of gas cushion in the budget, we're good..
