Yeah...they should be referred to as artists...they should be referred to as pioneers in the arena of hip hop.

hip hop pioneers?

how about LLCoolJ or Public Enemy?

Beastie Boys?

I regard them more as hip hop pioneers than Nas or that other guy.

todays rap/hip hop scene reminds me soo much of the 80s glam rock bands.....

Dude...i wasn't talking about creating hip hop. I was talking about styles. A lot of people look up to Jay-z and Nas in terms of who they idolize and use as an influence. Just like some do for Public Enemy or Kook Keith. Read a lot of the hip hop message boards out there. There is a LOT of resepect for Jay-z and Nas both...

This poll is ridiculous, there's no way Jay Z should be leading. But then again if people are basing their opinions on the crappy songs that are played on clear channel and MTV stations anything can happen

Exactly. I wonder how many people that voted for Jay-z have heard Reasonable Doubt...or those that voted for Nas have heard Illmatic.

I want that mos def live song from Chapelle show, that was the best live rap ive ever heard :p

I agree I like that one too. Overall I think Nas is a better lyricist. It just feels like his songs have more meaning.

Nas all over I mean here's a bit from the song one mic

"Jesus died at age 33, there's thirty-three shots
from twin glocks there's sixteen apiece, that's thirty-two
Which means, one of my guns was holdin 17
Twenty-seven hit your crew, six went into you"

Just Sick

Ya just gotta learn to ignore them. Any rap thread brings out the drones. I've gotten to the point where i ignore them most of the time...;)

Dude, you're totally right... about Jay-Z. Total Glam Rapper.

Early Nas, though, is on par with all the greats. He just sold out. Jay-Z, however, has always sucked.

I voted for Jay Z. I think he is a better rapper. This coming from the guy who hates most mainstream rap in general. But Jay Z has a dope flow! Nas has good lyrics, but Jay Z's flow is sick!!!

It's all about the way it makes you feel. The setup. The behind the scenes of it. The exclusivity. The higher society feeling about it. Jay Z has always had it. Nas is still teaching kids to read...

Jay-Z's beats are his clincher. NAS's lriscs and soudn are what make it for him.

I'll admit Jay-Z is good, but listen to "get down" and " One Mic" by NAS and you will instantly recognize that he is the better talnet

It seems like everyone who is concentrating on Nas being the better general is over looking his lack of consistency. The fact that he put out 1 or 2 albums that were good should not overshadow the fact that almost every JayZ album has been sucessful and popular. Not that being mainstream/popular should be the only measure of talent but it should still be a large one.

The fact that Nas hasn't put out much good material in the last few years should tell you something. If he was truly the superior rapper/lyracist, don't you think that no matter what his label was he would be able to outshine JayZ, or at the very least put out a few good songs? The simple fact is that he hasn't been able to and all the people who have chosen Nas are overlooking this fact and are biased because of 1 or 2 good cds.

I am not trying to persuade anyone to change their minds, I believe both rappers are fairly talented in their own right. I am just trying to critique and anaylze the votes at hand.

I seriously recommend listening to Nas - 'Gods son' before saying that Nas hasn't come up with something good for the last couple of years, it has some really good tracks on it.
