She's an excellent cook, unfortunately I didn't inherit any of her culinary skills :(

It's funny how some people are born chefs, know exactly how much water or booze to add to some food without using a measuring cup.

<--- Can't properly cook top ramen without a measuring cup :(

Hell yes. She's a great southern cook. She can make cornbread like no other. I start drooling just thinking about all the goodies that are coming up for the holidays. My wife's a great cook too, not taking anything away from her. But nobody can make dinner like mom.

This is a cool thread. When I was young, I thought my Mom had Mad Skillz with the Pots and Pans. As I got older and started cooking myself, I realized that Mom wasn't really all that and a bag o'chips with the pots and pans.

Compared to what I like and how I cook, Mom cooks very bland food. Not a lot of garlic, onion, oregano or parselly. Strange thing is she's Italian! Actually, so am I. 100% I am first generaton American. Yes, I was born and raised here. No, it doesn't bother me if you call me Vinny Pizza Boy, Guido, Guinea Wop, Doo Wop or anything else.

Anyway, I like lots of garlic, onion, black pepper, etc. When I do go to visit, my Moms pasta sauce is kinda bland to me. I asked her if she's changed anything about the way that she makes it, but she said she hasn't changed anything in 40 years. :Q

Mom doesn't really have a large repetoire (sp?) either. She makes a few things really well, but isn't much into "experimenting." That's OK though; I love my Mom! :) <crowd goes "awwwwwwwww!">

Infos,

Nah, I didn't change anything like that. It was just a typo. My wife knows I love her cooking. And actually my favorite cook in the family is my grandmother. I used to HATE Mexican food until I agreed to try her annual Mexican meal. I've been hooked ever since. And she's coming up to stay with my folks this Christmas so we've convinced her to cook Mexican for our Christmas Eve meal. I can't wait! What's ironic is that she cooks phenomenal Mexican food yet she's nearly full-blooded Italian.

yes. we used to own a restaurant. she cooks all kinds of food. our relatives usually come to our house to eat for thanksgiving. she cooks abut 85% of the food. we usually have 2 20-25 pound turkeys, a honey baked ham, roast beef, chinese, mexican, italian dishes and whatever she wants to try to make. mmm can't wait till Nov.:)

First meal I ever had in the Air Force was Thanksgiving dinner and I remember thinking to myself:

Why does everybody complain about chow in the service?

Does that answer your question?

I love watching Alton Brown
His Good Eats TV show is my favorite on the Food TV Network :p

I think that cooking and resultant flavors created have improved immensely
over the past decade or so what with the promotion and increased
availability of all types of spices :p
