Being involved in your driving, shifting gears manually, listening to the engine, responding to the road, taking a curve at high speed, are all typically "manly" things to do with a car. It just so happens that the Miata also does these things VERY well.

Women treat cars like appliances. Miatas are NOT an appliance. They are for pure driving fun. How is that not manly?
That's like saying "Putting on work clothes, getting in the dirt, filth and sweat all over you, working under the hot beatnig sun. These are manly - oh, but wait you're planting daffodils."

Skoorb, I believe you have that analogy completely backwards.
Nope, I wrote what I meant to say :)

No, I mean you have it backwards in a SAT kinda way. Like rain:spring as snow:____ kinda way.

I grew up driving Miatas. I don't really care for them but I wouldn't say it's a chick car.

There are two kinds of males that drive Miatas...

the aforementioned metrosexuals and the roadster-lovers... in other words the people that love the Miata to go racing with because of it's cheap $$ and it's great handling.

EDIT: btw, even racers make fun of Miata drivers for questionable masculinity.

Triumph, I'm with you on this 100%. :)

There is a simple joy in driving an nimble open car that can't be felt in an over powered behemoth. A car with a chassis
that is not over whelmed by its engine's power. To drive anticipating the apex, not having to over brake but maintaining speed through the turn. An intimate cockpit to share with only one other person. Top down on a cool evening, heater on high and sharing a lap blanket draped just below the knees. Shifting gears just to hear the motors song.

I miss the roadsters I've owned, AH3000, TR-3, TR-4, Bug Eye Sprite, Fiat 124 Spyder and my second GF had a MGA.
Always wanted an Alfa, just for the noise :D

The most fun I had dirt riding was on a 125cc because it made me think and plan, plus it kept me out of trouble.
Most Americans drive with a point and shoot mentality, cars or bikes.

I have never questioned my own masculinity be the car or bike I ride. As goofy as they are, I love Moto Guzzi.
Harley riders hold me in contempt, then the road get twisty and its bye-bye time.

I only know one person with a miata. He's a guy, but I still think it's a chick car because you should see how he looks in it. He's like 6'4", and he looks like biga$$ clown in a shriner car.

if by "manly" you mean the kind of man who drives
around with his beloved little chihuahua, then yes.

I drive a 2000 Monte Carlo. It's a pretty big car as 2-doors go. I'm definitely compensating for something... MY KNEES! I'm 6'9"; if I could afford a truck, I'd have one.

Too small and not sporty enough to be manly. It's real small which in and of itself is not girly, but the lines of it are too plain. Take a look at a BMW Z3 same size car, but way sportier. Looks like a car built to perform, not like a little, plain 2 seater convertible. Z3=manly, Miata=girly.

shut up, the z3 is a chick car too. :p

Lol! Ok Hammer, which would you rather have? A Z3 or a Miata?

i would rather drive a car that i wouldn't have to turn in my man card for. :p

Stop being a little priss.... if you need a "manly car" to prove that you're a man, you're probably compensating for something... ?

try again numbnuts. you can't defend driving around in your pink beetle. nice try.

Even if they extend the chasis of the Miata to be 2' longer, it's still a chick car because of the lines. There are plenty of other cars that will never be labeled as chick car, even with their small stature, lets start with Porsche, and the S2000 is closely behind.

Yeah, it's not the size. It's the appearance. I don't think those tiny little MGs are chick cars. Cars for a delusional history professor who thinks he lives in England maybe, but not a chick car. If they'd take the miata, rip all the panels off, throw them in the garbage, and put a new more aggressive appearance to it it would lose the chickiness of it quickly, IMO. Of course they'd lose sales, since women would stop wanting them, and the metros would have to save up a few more grand for an MR2.

Stock Miata's are a little lame, but if you mod them a bit they can be real monsters. Check out Flying Miata. They turbo and supercharger kits that will make ~300hp.

300 hp+ small, tight handling car= kick your ass (for not a lot of money)

Plus its not some dumbass riced civic that wil still suck not matter how much power it has.;)
