They have the best rates it seems, but I've heard some bad things about them (I hear bad things about all of them actually). I'm thinking about switching to them, but I want to make sure they're okay. Btw, I'm near San Francisco, CA.

They suffer from the same performance shortfalls as all the other GSM carriers. That said, if you are going to go GSM, go TMobile. I've found service fairly spotty w/ both Cingular and TMobile in the bay area. In LA they're both pretty good though.

How do you think the AT&T/Cingular merger will affect this?

Been on them since June 03. I answered decent, because they did still bill me once for $138 out of the blue which took a bit of time to get sorted out with. My contract ends in a few months and I plan on sticking with them.

SoCal resident and I have t-mobile and I think they're pretty good! WAY better than ATT. I think Verizon is king around here, but I'll never own a verizon product because of those goddamn "can you hear me now?" commercials!!!! DIE VERIZON DIEEEEE!!!!!!

Have you ever not gotten reception/had dropped calls? Where? How about in Marin County?

i don't get reception in a few indoor places like in some restuarants in the 99 ranch mall in richmond. i've had very few dropped calls, but i don't think it was on my side because when i look at the phonel, reception was still full. even then, its still a very insignificant amount in my span of 2 years.

edit: dunno about marine county, dont even know where it is

I have used TMobile for 2 years. The service is either excellent in some areas, or horrible in other areas. I cant use the phone in my house, or most indoor places...no reception. Their plans are pretty good. Unlimited weekends, free nights....long distance, etc. Their phones arent bad either. They have excellent customer service though. I am currently looking for another plan, only for better reception....thats my only complaint.

I live in Portland and have been with TMobile since June. Service is good except at my house! The reception was ok in the first couple months but then has been really crappy since then. Once my contract is up, I'm switching out. I'm just waiting to see how the AT&T/Cingular merger is going to play out. I know that AT&TW will be no more but that is ways down the road. Still, Verizon is king up here.

A good resource for mobile phone advice is howardforums or wirelessadvisor.

I have used Voicestream/T-mobile for over 3 years now in Washington State and I love it. Great reception, cool phones, and, IMO, the best customer service out there. Longest time on hold during normal time, 30 seconds. I once had to wait over 5 min, but that was when the east coast was hit by a hurricane and they had alot of service outages over there. I heard and continue to hear too many bad stories about cingular, AT&T (now one big happy family) and especially Sprint. I just stayed away from verizon cause I hated the commercials :)

awesome in my area - buffalo, ny. anywhere I go, at least 3 bars. the best way is to try it out yourself. if it works great for you, go with them. their phones are great too.

Tmobile is cool cuz they got free roaming (do they still)?

But their network is not as powerful or vast as Verizon. I use Verizon because I like reliability of service... but most people seem to like fancy phones that Sprint and T-mobile support and Verizon does not.

i like T-mobile. I have been with them since they were Voicestream. I get good recption, but there are 1 or 2 spots that come to mind where i get droppped calls. That is in the Tewksbury Wal*Mart and on parts of I-93 .

Nicely put.

I had tmobile about 1 year ago and thought that the service was great in some areas but terrible in others. If you use your phone on the freeways, then you should be fine. Both San Jose and SF seemed decent when i used my phone there.

I recently switched to Verizon and it works MUCH better - but you pay up the A$$.
