Poll: Is paying exact in cash a low class thing to do at a regular restaurant

I was at a restaurant today for dinner with my friend. The dishes run from $11 - $20 and people can dress casually inside.

the bill came to $39.08. I had 8 cents and put that towards the bill but my friend says that is a low class thing to do, he says the proper thing to do is round up to the nearest dollar and then add in the tip. I disagree. I think you pay exact or close to it if you have the change and then add in tip.

So is paying exact change (if you have it) and then adding in the tip a low class thing to do.

To be completely honest, I always pay the bill w/ a CC then leave the tip in cash 🙂

lol why would that be low class? as long as you tip accordingly, i dont see the problem

is your friend an elitist snob?

I normally pay with CC too, but today I decided not to bring it because we were not in the sanctuary of Manhattan.

if the bill came to <$40, thats fine...i'd question if it was "low class" if the bill got >=$100.

whats the difference?

what class would it be if the bill is $41-99? middle?

No, if you just pay that and not the tip then YES!

It's not low class, but what's the point? You're going to leave anbout $6 for a tip anyway, right? So why not just put down $45 on the table? Did you really put $39.08 in one pile, and then put $5.92 in a seperate pile as a tip? Seems like a waste of time to me.

I used to try to do that to help the waitress out - that way she'd get an even dollar amount as her tip and not have to deal with the change. But then I realized it doesn't matter anyway, because they have to split their tips with the cook, busboy, etc. I pay with credit card now.

because if you put down just $45 (what my friend wanted to do) then when the waitor gets the money he thinks "Oh, $5 and change" as opposed to "I got $6"

I usually pay to the nearest dollar primarily because I'm lazy, but I don't consider paying exact change low class.

The waiter really doesn't care if his tips come in exact dollar amounts. If you rounded up instead of down he'd have gotten $6.92 instead of $5.92, and he'd rather have that. By the time everything has been added up and the tips have been split with the rest of the staff, he wont have even change anyway, so he'll jsut go to the cash register and make himself the simplest change he can. You really think he takes home 50 $1 bills? No, he trades them in for two $20s and a $10.

Your friend is a moron. The only thing insulting you can do is leave a tip on one cent with the tails end up. That's to show your displeasure with the serice. Never have done it, but that's what is done.

AS for change? Hek no. Your friend is a 'tard. The last thing a waiter/waitress wants is spare change. I'd rather have whole dollars, wouldn't you?
