They do have a substantial amount of natural resources, so they will always be somewhat of a power. BUT, they need to get their political situation all straightened out before they can be a superpower again.

What's the criterion for "Superpower"?

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
That's the most ricockulous thing I've ever heard. That's like asking if Canadians will stop playing hockey anytime soon or if the country of Chad in Africa might produce 1 person actually worth money. ;)

I'm working on it, but it's awfully hard to unite so many people across such a large and often unfriendly geographic area.

As much as it hurts to say this... (Canadian pride getting in the way here :D)...

... equal or greater to the United States, either economically or militarily.

I feel your pain guy, I love Canada too - but ultimately we all must come to that conclusion that indeed for the time being, America is the "yard stick" against which we can only measure ourselves and others.

my dad always told me, doesnt matter if u have one missile capable of wiping humanity( say like russia) or a few 1000 missilies (like usa)...u are both super powers capable of destroying all traces of life on earth.

Mother Russia is still quite powerful.

Your father clearly is/was a wise man.

However doesn't it also stand that by his reasoning (no offense intended) almost every first, second and third world nation is a "superpower"?

yeah it is true if each of those nations have missles to travel the whole globe and enough firepower to wipe it out....I highly doubt that countries like say pakistan, north korea , india, iraq, england, france and israel have the powers to do so. china and russia clearly need to be given "respect" :D

Upon what foundation do you make this statement?

You mean on what foundation do i say those countries are not powerful enough...i think it has been documented at a lot of places that russia and china are the two countries who have the ICBM capabilites...ICBM as in Intercontintal Ballistic Missles.

EDIT: A Large Cache of ICBMs to be more precise.

In your opinion, will we see the rise of the Soviet Empire again?

I wouldn't worry about that. I think that China is a bigger player, really. They have waay more people and nuclear power, and their politics is maybe the most straight in the world.

I find it a bit ironic that Russia has a flat 13% tax rate and is currently working on removing corperate taxes. Their economy should be picking up quickly.

Sounds like a it would be conducive to economic expansion, but I wonder how long it will take any country to throw off the communist mindset, a mindset where you look to others for your salvation.

We already have a new Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. EU :)
It's funny how NATO was setup to protect the Europeans from Russian commies, and now the Europeans are bigger commies than the Russians. :D
Well, one good thing about EU is that they are a bunch of wimps. I think on some levels US and Russia have a lot more in common than we think.
