Poll : Is it a good idea to have harddisk partition to seperate OS, Application & other data ?

Win2k goes south today,

#$(&%#(*(% corrupted file, can't save it using emergency disk

luckily I have a Ghost image create a few days ago.

However, I do lost some data.

Do u guys have different parition on harddisk for OS, Application, data?

& what is your guys backup policy.. I never backup, lesson learnt..

:(

If your OS crashes, having separate partitions will save your data. If your HDD crashes all is lost anyway. I keep everything in one partition and back up regularly.

I have one HD that has my OS, apps and such and another HD for my MP3s(and some assorted files and videos)
there is one partition on each one

ok, here's a really beginner's question, but i'm curious and want to learn. i'm running windows xp pro. if i want to partitition my harddrive, do i need to format and start from scratch?

You need to fdisk your hard drive into two partitions, and then format. But yes, you start from scratch.

None of the above. I have 3 - 4 partitions. 1 for the OS and Apps, 1 for music, 1 for backup and 1 for a CD burner cache (never use it though).

Unless you use something like Partition Magic which will just do the partitioning of the drive and leave the data alone(if it supports NTFS that way I havent used PM in a long time).

DamienK, Partition Magic does support NTFS in version 7.0 and above, I think it is. A good program, it is.

I have the OS+programs on one partition, another OS on the next partition. The data is on a separate drive. :)
