POLL: Is ebonic a language or dialect ?

If it is a language, does that make someone bilingual if they can also speak proper English? :light:

If it is a dialect, what other language have you heard it spoken in? Ebonic German? 😕

Whatever it is, its seems more and more companies are producing commercials with ebonic words to attract a ghetto audience. A few examples are Tmobiles prepaid phone service and several recent Burger King and Mcdonalds commercials. The biggest example was Snoopdogs appearance in November / Decembers Chrysler commercials with Lee Iacocca.

Edit: More choices added!

I'd say it's an accent/slang
Just like how southerners have their own accent and slang terms.
They aren't dialects, and certainly not other languages.

It's a load of dung. Educators calling it anything else is a cop out. They don't want to expend the effort to teach proper grammar.

Unfortunately, the truest statement so far. It's a dialect under a different name, no real difference from the "jive" talk from decades ago. But certainly not something that should ever be taught purposefully to the youth in our schools.

Put another way, should we be declaring Tennessee/Virginia folk as speaking their own language and adjusting lessons accordingly? I have a crazy time understanding ANYONE regardless of ethnicity when I visit my family down there in the mountains.

And whoever chooses to call it a "mental deficiency": thanks for the racist angle. Knew it was bound to pop up at some point.
