Hi

Anyone else not want ot pay tolls for the new re-design of 81?
Anyone else thinkin of doin anything about it?

I don't see why the western half of Virginia gets to pay for Tidewater's and NoVA's road improvements AND pay for our roads PLUS pay tolls each time we want to drive somewhere. Recently, NoVA and Tidewater were given the choice via referendums on local tax increases to pay for their roads and they voted it down. However, the West doesn't get that choice - we will be forced to pay use fees on our one main road. (Nevermind that NoVA and Tidewater have a network of interstates and high capacity roadways vs. our one)

State funding for VA-58 has never been fulfilled nor has the construction timeline improved. The state government is increasingly cutting off the Western half, especially southwest Virginia, from the rest of the state. It is no wonder Virginia Beach loses money from Western Virginia tourists when it is sadly easier to travel to Myrtle Beach two states away than travel 58 to VA beach.

They expect to pay it off with tolls at a cost of $3.3 billion. The original proposal created tolls only for trucks, and only recently has the plan been modified to add tolls to cars, too. Oh, sure, they claim it will be low cost tolls. Do you really believe that? How long until western Virginia turns into the New Jersey Turnpike?

Local and regional traffic that used I-81, the longest interstate in VA, to travel will be forced into the backroads, already too crowded and lacking safety measures (curvy roads on mountain tops with no guard rails and a long (but quick) trip down)). What will happen to the quality of rural roads when 30,000 motorists are riding the country lanes?

The polls were originally supposed to pay for rail improvements so as to move more freight less by trucking and more by track. However, the federal government WILL NOT allow a state government to tax an interstate for money allocated for rail transport. However, the state government DOES have the CHOICE on who to tax and how much to tax for tolls.

So who else is fed up with Richmond?

hmm..I don't venture to much into SW Va so I really don't know what to say. I do use 81 a lot but only in Pa up through central NY.

nj turnpike and parkway were only supposed to have tolls to pay for the cost of construction.

but since 0.35$ a mile to the state for doing nothing seems like a good deal to them!!!

wheres the option for "NJ has a greater influence than you think!"

They were wanting to convert 95 in NC to a toll road as well in lieu of having a lottery

Toll roads suck ass, maybe that's why I dislike Jersey so much

Tolls suck!~ :(

I wish they would do something about the mixing bowl near DC....

I used to look forward to driving south instead of north from DC, but looks like we will be screwed any way we go soon.

so the road doesn't have tolls now? the way i understand it, the only way they can get tolls on an interstate is if the road was a tollroad before it entered the interstate system.

Well they've already dumped about $700 million, plus an additional 45% cost overrun into the mixing bowl (one project).
NoVA had a tax referendum for an additional money to be allocated to transportation projects either last year or in 2002 but got voted down....

I always hated driving in the MD side of the beltway as road construction NEVER finishes (and they are never working on anything!) and MD troopers make the most of their time.

I've never heard of this plan... But I oppose it. Having lived in SW Virginia, and now in Nova, I know how it is. And in no way should you guys pay for our roads up here. This place is a complete mess and it's worlds different than the rural SWVA. Making You pay for Us is pretty ridiculous.

The stretch of I-81 I travel daily through PA is a nightmare. It's always under construction. But there are no tolls. I travel I-81 through all of PA on a regular basis, from the Maryland border to the I-80 interchange. If it were to become a toll road in VA, whose to say that MD, PA or any other state along I-81 wouldn't make it a toll road as well.

I say screw Richmond! Enough is enough!

I'm from Central NY and IIRC, there was a story on the local news not too long ago about the state government exploring the idea of tolls on I-81. I forget if it was all of 81 or just certain stretches, but I know that they were considering it for a while. I'll see if I can find any articles about it. I don't like the idea at all.

-Tom

EDIT: Here is an article from one of the local news stations (dated about 3 weeks ago) on the issue.

If you have driven on I81 recently, you may notice that there are no potholes nor is there piles of garbage along the highway. Plus, you get a great view of the mountains as it runs parallel to the Blue Ridge Parkway.

<sarcasm>Yeah, like the PA Turnpike.</sarcasm>

How about taking backroads? They are more scenic, anyway.

Or you could move... unless you have some compelling reason to stay in the wonderful city of Richmond.

81 isn't anywhere near Richmond - much more west...

As for back roads, here is a link to a highway map for VA... mapquest has poor colors, but the lite blue is the state boundry... If you observe, there's nice clumping of various roads except for west of Richmond and the I-81 corridor which is only connected with 64 to go east and west and is in the middle of 81. The picture is slightly misleading b/c the nice pale color north and west of the 81 highway are roads in the heart of the very tall and windy Appalachian mountains. :)

Obviously you've never driven on the PA Turnpike. Easily one of the worst roads in the country. 81 is a DREAM compared to it.

Thx for the invite alm4rr - I hadn't heard about this.

How long until western Virginia turns into the New Jersey Turnpike?

This is a great point, but honestly, this began a long time ago. Anyone who has driven the Roanoke -> Blacksburg spur can see it.

I used to drive the entire VA striip of 81 - Winchester to Blacksburg - nearly 2-3 times a month. Fortunately, my ex-girlfriend and I broke up ;) but I can't imagine how much that would've sucked with tolls added to it. Sure they say it will be cheap, but look at how the costs of the Dulles Toll road rose so quickly.

I'd like to see more info about this. Although 81 looks great now, in reality, perhaps they are expecting a large increase in traffic to happen within coming years and they want to keep it looking good by getting extra income? If its the only way to keep the road in good shape, I'll have to agree with it, but I'd like to see other options first.

a lot of Virginia Tech students are going to get upset about this.

What, are they charging tolls now from Roanoke to Blacksburg?

If so, take either the Ironto exit or follow Catawbwa (sp?) Valley. Both much more scenic and more fun. :)

No tolls yet, but they made the Ironto stretch a "safety area" and so all moving fines are doubled.

i heard there were two plans, one that tolled us (the regular drivers) and one that tolled all the commercial vehicles. i do believe 81 needs some major changes and would fully support tolling the hell out of the commercial trucks
