At my call centre job, we all have internet access. However, it is company policy that anyone surfing the internet at their computer, including on breaks, is terminated immediately. No questions asked.

If we bring a cell phone in the building and are caught--even on breaks--terminated immediately.

Call in sick more than once a month, terminated.

But back to the point, can you surf the internet at work?

We are not allowed to use the internet for anything other than business purposes.
I work in a call center though and calls come quite often.

Didn't you get the memo? Taking more than 10 breaths a minute is considered wasting air, and if caught doing so, you will be terminated immediatly. You are allowed 1 bathroom break per week. If you take more than one, you are wasting company time and will be terminated immediatly.
What's that? Losing your hair? Well don't lose too much, if you go above a appropriate amount of hairloss in a 1 month period, you will be terminately immediatly.

its my opinion they fire people so often because it is cheaper to spend a week training new people than it is to give us raises and benefits after our 3 month probation

its a shame too because i like the job

That has to be illegal...

A coworker's wife works at PayPal, and he says they have to inform them of sick days 48 hours in advance.

I also work at a call center and i can surf, watch movies, play flash games, and pretty much do whatever I want. We only do corprate contracts though with really high service level agreements, so there is a lot of time between calls since we can't have people waiting long on hold, ever.
