OK, so I was going to see about a TBSC, but I waited, now have a bigger budget, and here's a run down:
I got a new video card and HD. the noise coming through is annoying. Blips and two distinct hums, other noise when there is IDE chatter. But...sound cards I could get didn't help.
Unmarked TBSC: still noise
Unmarked Montego: still noise
Diamond MX300: still noise

Now, my question: will an Audigy2 ZS, Fortismo III (unlikely) or Revo be sufficiently shielded from this noise?

If not, has anyone used the Philips Aurilium? The Audigy2 NX might be an option, but is on the high side of my budget, and I'm not fond of the design.

As far as gaming is concerned, 3d effects as a solid feature are all I am worried about. As long as there's not a bunch of echo and distortion, ala GTXP 6.1, I'll be happy, as I easily spend 98% of the time listening to music through headphones.

I voted Audigy 2 ZS because I have one and am quite happy with it. I have never had any issues like you are having. Are you talking about coming through the speakers?

if you want absolutely *no* noise, go with a Soundblaster Extigy. it's basically an external Audigy.

I bought one a few months ago and have been totally happy with it. haven't had to deal with any outside "noise" in my speakers since I hooked it up.

Yes. It's different with various cards (or onboard), but still there, and worse when scrolling things or using the IDE devices heavily (or the second channel at all). On all cards it is loud enough to be heard over all but the loudest music.

Yeah, but $150 is quite high. I have just over $200 to go for sound and an HD. Part of why I am looking at the Aurilium is that it is $100, and it has everything I might need, but just lacks the gaming quality of an Audigy...and unfortunately finding someone who has used one is hard, and there's no place that will ship one same day (if Mwave had it in stock right now, I'd buy it and see how it did...however, the other listed cards can be had within 3 days).
The Audigy2 NX might be a'ight, but this doesn't sit well, and appears in a real review or two as well:
"1) The Audigy doesn't remember the mixer volume settings (eg Master and Wave) across a power up/down cycle of the Audigy hardware. I really hate having to go in and reset the volume every time I turn the system on."
