i got few copies of vista ultimate through intel promo.
i tried installing it on few of my quadcores.
but it only lasted few days before switching back to xp.

at least in my experience, it's always slower than xp when doing actual work... video editing.

I prefer XP. I can't think of one thing that would make me prefer Vista over XP. To me, Vista is slower, isn't compatible with some business programs, and is usually slower in gaming.

The OP's machine will run Vista 32 or 64 fine. Since you've been running with XP for years, I'd give Vista a try. You have little to lose since you're getting them both for free through school.

I've had Vista64 installed since Oct(?) 07 and haven't had any problems that I would consider major. Slow network and drive copies were my major complaints, which are very minor.

I never experienced the slow drive performance myself, but supposedly it was fixed in SP1.

If you can see 3.5 GB of physical memory and your pagefile is 3.8 GB, then the pagefile only gains you 0.3 GB of (virtual) memory (at a cost of 3.8 GB of disk space, which is negligible these days).

Transferring a file from drive 1 to drive 2 was slow for me, as was copying data from Vista machine to XP/Linux machines. Vista would only seem to use about 30% of the total 100Mb ethernet.

The bulk of these issues appear to be resolved with SP1.

I have 2.2TB of disk space. I'm not worried about a measly 3.8gb. :p
