If a good friend of yours was destroying their life by a drug addiction, would you tell them the hard truth about it? Even though they hate you for saying it? Would you continue to love them and continue to tell them the cold hard facts, even as they grow to hate you more and more?

When I first found out I would probably punch them in the face and then ask wtf was wrong with them. Then call them a moron a few times while lecturing them and then leave.

If you considered the person a "good" friend I would express the "hard truth" even though he or she might hate me for saying it & while I "try" my best to respect peoples' opinion, if he or she grew to hate me more for voicing my opinion, I'll know that I did my best to try and help, if that person didn't accept my advice, what more a friend do? I hope this helps a bit hellokeith.

For me, a good friend is somebody I can have meaningful conversation with. That gets tough in the depths of real addiction.
Before it gets to that point, you should be able to ask them what is going on, and what are they trying to accomplish on that path. If they are reachable at all, you might plant a seed of doubt.
After that, all you can do is tell them that you do give two craps and will always be there. They might come back some day.
