Just curious. My new teacher wants some funky (in my opinion) formatting for our math homework.

Which would you say is the best?

Here are the finalists:

I was always taught not to put the square root term in the denominator. So, my choice is none of the above. Multiply by x^(.5) and get that out of the denominator.

E or F (I voted F). You generally don't want radicals, negative exponents, or fractional exponents in the denominator (at least if you're in high school/this is for AcaDec).

Based on the fact that you must be in high school, I'm guessing E or F. In highschool they always whine about no square root term in the denominator.

As you've just recently joined, you obviously are unaware that this is unfortunately a regular occurrence in Off Topic.

I'm curious, where did you find enough information to say that it's a fact I'm in high school? ;)

I would probably use C).

I only say that because as an engineer, it's easier for me to see coefficients separate from variables and I couldn't care less if there is a fractional exponent in the denominator.

Another option would be to to get rid of the variable (and denominator for that matter) in the second term all together:

(1/2)x + 3x^(1/2) - 9x^(-1/2)

The sample terms you listed, and the fact that a teacher is worried about the way a square root is written.

I suppose you could be in college as an education major, having the anal retentive methods of the current generation of teachers passed on to you.

It was just an example. I'm in Calculus 2. I didn't feel like writing out integrals and summations and crap. :)
