Now, I know there are those of us upgrade components all the time, rather than buy a new rig or computer altogether, while some of us simply get a brand new rig and upgrade it rarely. Some of us simply get new rigs/computers and then do not touch them. But I'm talking about (generally on average) how long does it take for you to go completely from one setup to a brand new setup, totally different from the last ("Totally different" meaning all the major internal stuff inside the case like CPU, Mobo, GPU, etc -- don't worry about the floppy drive or monitor you've had for 20 years). Something like adding in 128MB of RAM doesn't qualify as a new rig.

I am one of the upgrade people. Only part from my original build that I have is my A78NX mobo, and 512MB stick of Corsair XMS. I am hoping to save the cash to go AMD 64, but first need to upgrade my 9600XT, plus I see no reason to go 64, without getting an X2. Sigh... it sucks being poor. :(

i rarely upgrade, i normally buy new rigs just because its not worth it IMHO for a 3 year old box you will need a new mobo vid cpu and ram and this is where most of the expense is so what i normally do is hand down my old one to parents and get myself a new one. BTW I am getting a new box in the next couple of weeks cant wait :)

2-3 years. For the last 3 systems I've bought a CPU and video card a step or two below the fastest, then upgraded the video card after a 1 - 1.5 years.

To me it's not worth the effort to be constantly upgrading just to stay on the bleeding edge, I'd rather be using my system than tinkering with it.

I've done that in all my rigs until the one I own now. That is the best strategy IMO. You get the best bang for the buck, and upgrading the GPU the following year enables you to play the latest games with no problem.

My last computer I built, and still own, is a P4 3.06ghz HT 800fsb, 1gb or DDR, a Geforce 6800, and two pretty decent 7200rpm drives. It is still a great computer considering it is over 2 years old and can still play any modern game at decent visual settings.

I got the latest stuff on my current rig, just because I wanted to see what it was like. :) This rig will still be capable 2yrs+ down the road, with a possible video card next year or whenever I can't play the latest games.

I have only bought ONE new computer: my original 166mhz Pentium system way back in February 1996. Since then, I have upgraded many, many, MANY times! Usually, at some point I will go through my "spare" parts collection (aka: takeoffs!) and decide that I can build a "new" computer and either give it away or put it to some use in my house. When I do that, about the only thing I will need to buy is a floppy drive (if I decide to put on on it). Everything else is previously used parts.

I had the first computer as a 350Mhz Pentium II system back in 1998 when Windows 98 was a month old. Used that until 2003. Then I bought this 2.533Ghz P4 Dell. I hate it. Want a A64 system. but my next comp is a lappy for college. So I wont see a new desktop for another 5 years or so.

I built my original system 3 years ago, and just built a new one this week. I'd say every three years is a good interval for computer upgrades if you want/need to keep on top of technological improvements.

Wow. A new CPU a month after getting a brand new one. That's hardcore spending  (Unless that was a dual CPU mobo).
