I plan on changing cars every 10 years... My first car is 4 years old and its a Hyundai so I have a 10 year warranty. When that up it will be time to get a new one.

Every 3-5 years. It depends on how happy I am with my car.

My current car ('99 Passat GLX) looks like it's going to be a 5 year car.

New car=waste of money. I try to go as long as possible between cars. (But the new car smell . . . so tempting . . . )

I would love to keep a car for long time and aim to do that with my current VW Golf Tdi

Unfortunately my previous cars I did not like and changed every 2 years.

Mazda Protege had no power when you had on A/C  and was like driving a tin can

Then I got a Subaru Forester which was okay, but started to develop clutch problems...I think previous owner either abused it or did not know how to drive a 5 speed :frown:

SHould have had a choice for "Whenever paying to fix it costs more than paying for a new one". Heh heh.

I have a 99 Grand Am that is out of warranty but works great. Plan on keeping it until it dies. Also have a 2002 Durango with a 7 year warranty so at least that long I would hope.

If I did the Lease thing then obviously it'd be more often.

I'm only 25 (like most of you) and I can't exactly afford a new car nor want to lease one every X years so... whenever it dies... because I love my car when I bought it with my hard-earned cash... why would I want to get rid of it if it's running ok ?

I had my first car for 18 months, my second for 3 years so hey I guess going by that it's either gonna be 4.5 or 6 years for this one.....

And I sold the last two in good condition and order.

after leaving home/growing up:

i bought a '84 Chevy Citation in 1987, sold it for $600 in 1992

bought a '90 Mazda Protoge in Nov 1989, it has about 165K miles and is running fine (except the A/C is dead) , i drove it to work today (needs some new speakers though, going to get some next month)

bought a '89 Isuzu 4x4 pickup in 1992, sold it in 1997

got a '88 pontiac 6000 from my mother-in-law in 1997, sold it for $400 in 1999

bought a '97 Saturn SC-1 in 1998, is has about 105K miles and needs some engine work, it is sitting in the garage until i can get it into the shop next month (it has good A/C , so i need to get it going for my "summer" work car)

bought a '98 Plymouth Grand Voyager Mini-van in 2002, it has about 90K miles , my wife drives it (the Mazda had been her main car until we got the van)

owned a few motorcycles in there during my younger/no kids days

hmmm .. when I was 16 (in 96) i got a POS falling apart 1991 Ford Escort ... thansmission died in 1998, had the transmission rebuilt, died 4 months later, had the transmission rebuilt under warranty, lasted until 1999. Trans Died again, sold it to the tow truck guy for $50 + towwing cost.

3 years that car lived ...
later in 1999 I bought my aunts Grand Am V6 (1994( a MUCH better car, but once it hit 100K, the engine started making strange noises, air conditioning died, locks and windows were no longer working .. And i wanted a better car. So in 2002 I bought my current car (1999 Chrysler 300M) ... its SOOO much better ... there is no comparison ... I hope to keep this for another 5 or 6 years ... and then trade it in .... but maybe I'll keep it longer if its good to me.

I have a very solid '98 Corolla now..about 123,500 miles on it, and it's still going strong. I'll probably keep it until it's not worth fixing..and it hasn't broken yet :)

My first car got totalled, my second I bought with 146,000 miles on it, sold it with about 250,000 (started sounding expensive) 4 years later. My current one I plan to keep until atleast 2008. (about 150,000 miles)

Current car #1 15 + years

#2 A year or so (Used car)

#3 Same

I refuse to own a car I can't keep running myself. So ALL my cars are older than most of the people on this board. ;)

I've usually gone about 4 years until the # of wrecks has rendered the car either unusable or I'm sick and tired of it :)

I've had my current car since Feb. 1997 and while it's not going strong, it's going and my situation requires me to keep it running at least 2 more years.
