Personally, i do a lot of surfing at work, maybe because im new and still have to dig into some projects, but i surfed a lot on my last job as well, what about you guys, what percentage of your weekly hours (for me it's *supposed* to be 40) do you actually spend working?

of the 15 hours I spend at work each week, I am doing actual work far less than 1% of the time. :)

I tell people, "yes, that B button will make the text bold that you have selected by clicking and dragging the mouse pointer over the appropriately desired section."

uh... why do you think i have a 13 post per day average?

seriously i do VERY LITTLE work around here. there just isnt alot to do. in fact a normal day here goes like this:

8:30 am - arrive at work

8:35 - 9:00 am - go to cubical turn on comp and open email, check email, open up forums.anandtech.com....get BIG cup of coffee.

9:00 - 11:00 am - check out the forums and laugh at all the funny threads, look to see if my boss has arrived yet (usually no), if no continue to read forums.

11:00am - 12:00 pm - try to look busy as vp's walk by and tell people that no i havent seen lou (my boss) yet.

lunch 1 hour

1:00pm - 2:00 pm - boss finaly arrives and tells me to see him in his office.

2:00 - 3:45 pm - sit in his office while he answers calls and takes care of everything but whatever it was hs wanted me to do.

3:45pm - 4:00pm listen to him babble and cuss about how no one consults the IT department before installing new hardware/software and how they expect us to support it.

4:00pm - other vp's come in and he tell me that he has a meeting and wont be able to give me an assignment till tommarow.

4:05 - 5:00pm sit around on the forums and bullsh'it about the election.

repeat repeat repeat.........

it been like that for the last 4 months ....... :(:(

Damn why did you have to bring this up...yes I voted for 30%. Its just hard not to when nobody can look at my screen and i have the web and MSN right here. Can't say I'm leading a stressful life. I work well enough that I can get away with this though, plus my project leader is an MSN addict, so nobody who knows cares

Most I'll ever do in my 8 hour day (1 hour lunch) is possibly 80% over the day, least I ever do is 15%.

Jesus Bigvince thats even a tiny bit worse than me...is there any other area other than IT in which you can get paid to do so bloody little? I do less than most people at work and make more!

I guess I'm a Working Class Hero - John Lennon

I never sit at either job, I'm always on my feet getting something done. I only work on the weekend now, but 24 hrs straight basically so I think I'm getting a fluid build up on my knees. It sucks. Major pain. But when the weekend is over, I'm a happy man again.

=)

I can't believe how inefficient the work place is!!! I have a blue-collar job (summer time), and I actually work 100% of the day! I think it's a shame that people enjoy getting away with this... I am happy that I am tired after work, I am proud when we have a huge production day at work, I like to see my company do well.

I just hope you slackers out there don't lose your jobs, because if you do it's probably your own fault.

I give 100% all the time. I'm always working, I'm thankfull for my job, and show it by working my butt off. I'm also the one who gets all the promotions while everyone else gets stuck in their dead-end position.

I just got a raise that DOUBLED what I am paid now, and moved me to the next level in the company. It took me 5months, usually it takes people 2-3 years, beceause they are lazy bums.

I also dont work in an office.

actually, i felt better when i was shoveling gravel or nailing shingles for 10 hours a day than i do from sitting in an office all day. I had more energy, better sleep, a better tan, more fun

the only problem was less pay :(

Umm... I guess you didn't see that I was going to school and this what I do in the summer. I can get 6 days a week sometimes 7 for lots of OT. I made a lot of money last summer and it was enough to pay for all my books, 2 semesters tuition, truck insurance, computer stuff...

I am not pissed off at you, but don't you think you should put in more of an effort? Think about it; If you ran a business would you hire yourself? I am proud to say that I am a hard, loyal worker. I would not regret hiring myself at all!

When I am done school I want a job that is challenging, not boring. I want a sense of accomplishment when I work. I thrive on that.

i have put in as much effort as i can. the fact is that i have been put in a position in which i cannot do anything with out the go ahead of my higher-ups, yes it sucks but theres not much i can do about it furthermore even if i could take the intiative to do something all the information i would need to do so (IP adresses, data bases, equipment etc...) are not at my disposal and are in fact restricted, and for the record this has got to be the most poorly managed IT dept. i have EVER worked for. so im sorry for the insult, I didnt realzie the conditoins of your employment so please accept my appology.

it's alright...

What you spoke is is why I love the company I work for! We have a program called the 'Continuous Improvement Prjoect'. If you can find any way of saving the company money you get a portion of the savings plus another percent goes towards the yearly X-mas bonus. One guy did a simple one of organizing our plastic garbage for recycling; He gets an annual cheque for $1500 and a little more from what goes into the pool. This program is great for people who want to succeed.

Feast or famine here...

Lately, though, I'm lucky to get 5% worth of productivity out of a 40-hour work week. I have a number of projects I would love to occupy my time with, but like bigvince, I have my hands tied by the higher-ups.

Oh well... if they want to pay me $25+/hour for sitting on my ass all day... so be it! :)

In my particular case, doing what I consider about 30% work efficiency:

I have good references from people in this company (been there 4 months). They are all happy with me, probabaly because my attitude is good and my work is good. I'm not going as fast as I could but honestly they don't know how fast I can go, and I do work fast when I do work...so they don't know any better, hence the better reference. True, it is a bit lazy, and I am in fact ambitious but in my current state in the company (1 of 2 technical people) there is little room for advancement until the company grows, and so at this time I'm doing quite well.

Add to this the fact that I've only had about a year to clear away a life of total and absolute laziness and procrastination; I think I'm doing ok...I'm getting there, just need more time - I burn out quickly!

I am also aware that the IT field could possibly get swamped with skilled workers in the future and I'm always trying to keep a tally on how I can maintain a secure skill so that I don't find myself out of work or undermined by people willing to work for much less !
