Hopefully, this poll works as I've never done one before. Saturday, a good friend of mine from High School is getting married. I'm still a poor college student and I'm wondering how much I should give him. This is the first one of my friends to get married so I have no idea what the going rate is for gifts. What do you think, considering that I am a good friend of his?

Are you attending the ceremony?
Are you attending a reception?
Are you bringing a date to the reception?
Is the reception a backyard cookout or a formal sit down dinner at a catering hall?

I'm not sure if I'll be attending the ceremony, but I will be attending the reception. Probably won't stay long though as I have to work later that evening. The reception is going to be informal and I won't be bringing a date.

$50 - $75 sounds good.
Enjoy.

I think the typical rule is to give a gift that's roughly enough to cover the cost that they prob. paid to have you there. So if they catered food, or are at a fancy hall, you give a little more.

'course, you are a college student, but even so, I voted for the $75-100 range.

That's the rule I used. I gave $100 cash in the card and then about $100 gift as well. I'm also a college student but not exactly starving. After seeing the joint tho I felt like I should have given more. Good thing both families are loaded;)
