I'm thinking of upgrading my system next month to intel's 800mhz bus cpu, but that will require a new Springdale board and Ram. All told that's going to be about $400. Better than buying a new system, but upgrades come more than once a year and it adds up. I probably don't need all that power, but I guess I'm a stupid speed crazed techie.

is it all worth what we give up? Excercise, Money, Family?

Just thought I would spend a little time to reflect since we too often get caught up in things, and forget what's important.

I try not to upgrade unless absolutely necessary.
You can never catch up to the advancing technologies so why bother?

I upgrade when I cannot do what I need anymore. Thus I get a whole new computer - case, motherboard, CPU, video card, everything. Then I just shift the old computer down the line - replacing everyone's computer with a newer one. I am a lot more flexible with my computer uses than other people here. For example, if I don't have enough memory to play a new game, I don't run out and get more memory, instead I turn off the music and play the game just fine (leaving the sound effects on). If my fps are low on a new game, I'll turn off some eye candy and be just fine. Doing this I only need to spend ~$600 every 5 years on equipment and I can play every game and run every program. I wouldn't gain much but a little more eye candy by spending 10 times that much.

Up until this year I've spent WAY too much, frequently $1000+ in a month.

Lately I've been doing much better, though, I've spent around $500 so far this year.

I usually do a "complete" upgrade every 3 years... with minor upgrades in the middle (e.g. 128->256MB ram, 30->60GB hard drive, 98se->XP) but nothing major.
