i used to believe i didn't care about them, and i'd go to see movies i wanted to see then read the reviews after, but i found that i almost always agree with sites like rottentomatoes or the average movie grades from yahoo movies. say what you like, but it seems that when 34 reviews of a movie are crappy, the movie itself is usually pretty bad, and same thing applies when they're glowing.

Most of the time, I agree with them. Sometimes I end up finding a movie that I love that everybody else hates (read: Ecks vs. Sever) or a movie that I hate that everybody else loves (read: hellboy).

sure they do. in general, if a ton of critics hate a movie, it probably sucks. there are dumb fun exeptions, but its nice to have an idea. rottentomatoes.com is good. and well, ebert isn't bad. sometimes i watch dumb fun movies they hate, and other times i watch movies i wouldn't have thought of going normally because of a ton of good reviews.

For the past few years, I've been paying more attention to movie reviews... and I've found that they're all pretty useless in predicting whether or not I'll like a given film.

BTW, I'm with you on Hellboy, FFMCobalt. Ebert actually liked that wreck; I was irritated by it.

The onion usually has pretty accurate and very funny reviews. The reviews for horrible movies like battlefield earth, kangaroo jack and the lastest ashton kutcher movie are just as funny as anything on the front page.

I regularly check rottentomates.com to get a general take on movies that are either in theaters or out on video. More often than not, so long as there are enough reviews there, the percentage is a safe bet.

If it gets an equivalent of 2 out of 5 stars or worse, that's when I care. Otherwise I'll give it a try.

if there are a bunch of terrible reviews from reviewers i trust (A. O. Scott, for example) then i might avoid seeing it in the theater. but generally, if i want to see a film, ill go regardless. there are few movies i really want to see in the theater anymore. at this point its cheaper for me to wait, buy the dvd, watch it once with a friend or two and sell it afterwards.

I generally don't read them before I go see a movie unless I am arguing with Skoorb about which one to see...then I saw "Well, everyone said that one was terrible so how about this one?" Works like a charm! Heh. Not that I read them then either. :p

Movie reviews can't be accurate because they're a particular reviewer's assessment of a movie. You can find reviewers who seem to share your tastes in film, though.
