Poll: How many times has your Win2k/WinXP rig crashed?

Argg... I have just succeeded in getting my win2k machine to freeze twice (2nd time was when I succeeded in duplicating it).

Here's what I did: 1) Control Panel>> Administrative Tools>> Local Security Policy 2) I expanded "Local Policies" 3) Right clicked on Security Options and clicked "Open". And then everything froze, does anyone else's machine freeze at that point?
Man, what the heck could be wrong. 😕
WinXP is about the same as Win2k in stability right?

***Fixed problem by removing 12.41's and installed 6.5's instead***

My lockup problem is when trying to use Nero 5.5.6.4 - it locks up trying to scan the IDE/SCSI bus. Using WinXP pro, Intel 815 motherboard. 5.5.5.1 did the same thing, any version previous to that, it doesn't install on XP, gets to the screen of which 'user group' to let have access to Nero and the chooser box is empty and you cannot proceed past that (I would imagine an upgrade would have worked but this machine was a totally clean install).

all the time, i blew my PSU so i'm using a 140 watter which makes it just totally lock up quite often.

even before it was somewhat often but only when playing games. blame it on shoddy nvidia drivers and shoddy via hardware/drivers and just windows in general for letting it happen

sigh

Bad ram? Hmmm.. Using Crucial 2-2-2 PC133 256 meg stick. Works fine to my knowledge and my system is not o/ced.
I think its Nvidia's 12.41 dentonator drivers. Hmm... I will go try the 6.5's (yeah I still have a TNT2 Ultra).

only once, since september. but i think it was caused by the fact that my heatsink fell off of my slot-a processor and hit my video card

I've never had this rig (check my sig for the link to it) crash unless it was my fault. In fact, I think every crash I've had was related to running BlackIce Defender (which I've since uninstalled). Rock solid since then. WinXP was the best thing I did to this PC since I rebuilt it 🙂

My XP bluescreens when I run certain movies. Not sure why, it happens to certain AVI and MPG movies

Haha... well my w2k rig crashes once in a while, but 99% of the crashes are caused by the ati tvwonder program when recording...

my lil bro's xp system...crashes once or twice ... a WEEK! can't get it working properly...still laggin a lot...

yeah...anyhow...i don't think the w2k system should crash opening those folders Mista!

good luck fixing them

I installed the 6.5's and now there are no more freezes. Wow, what a difference video drivers make in a system. 🙂

Had some kind of an Windows Activation Error saying that something on my system is preventing it from checking the license. Did a repair installation, and got everything back up and running. Hope it stays this way.

I had plenty of crashes, eventually got the mobo exchanged. It was unbearable before that. So I don't blame Win2K, it was a hardware issue for once.

Last time I got win2k to screw up and crash on me was when I fiddled too much with my settings in my bios... didn't like that none-too-much.

21.83 here on vid drivers... try them, they're *gasp* new! 6.5's like 2 years old now?

if you're running winxp, try this:

press "print screen" to take a screenshot
open clipboard by typing 'clipbrd' in a run dialog box or command prompt
save the screenshot as a cpl file to your hdd
click (or double click) that screenshot cpl file to open it

crash.

i've tried it on a couple machines, and for some reason, it keeps doing it no matter the configuration.

also, what do u mean by "crash"...i'm talking about programs crashing, not necessarily the OS, or enough instability that a restart is necessary.

It crashes whenever I use ZoneAlarm and Netmeeting at the same time, in both Win2K and XP, so I'm using Sygate Personal Firewall now.

For the last 6 months that I've had XP, I can count all the crashes on 1 hand(and yes, I'm normal; only 5 fingers😉). Granted, that may be a bit much for some people, but when you consider how hard I am on this poor machine, I think it's doing a very good job.

Early versions of DIablo II got my Win2k install to BSOD every now and then...however, none of that in the last 3 or 4 months. I've been running XP parallel to 2k for a hair voer 2 months now, and it hasn't crashed once (though some programs have, the OS has remained running). Not Serious Sam, Diablo II, Age of Empires, Starcraft, Quake3, Tribes2, MW4, LAME, Winamp, WMP (I hate it, but it and winamp are having file association battles, so I put up with it), AIM, ICQ, Imici, MBM 5, SETI, IE 6, Opera 6, PSP 6, or anything else I run has caused any trouble since I moved to XP.

Ugh. My Win2k box crashes every day.

Whenever I open my CD-ROM drive, it BSODs (didn't used to, this started happening in July). Randomly when I play Q3 and CS it'll crash. And sometimes, for no reason at all, it'll just stop updating the screen, but it will still respond to pings and Winamp will continue on playing.
